RE: 2018 MAC Football Pick 'Em -- Week 1
Martin and Carey are coaches who do a good job developing players and teaching fundamentals but are terrible game managers and head decision makers during the game. If each could just defer decisions like punt/go for it, field goal/go for it, timeout?, short yardage play-calling, and just do the rest of the head coach work, they'd be fine.

example was NIU's last drive of first half (when it was a close 3 point game). NIU has 1 timeout and the clock is at 19 seconds. they complete a pass for a first down in field goal range and the clock stops at 11 seconds to move the chains. The obvious decision is use the timeout. focus your offense and field goal unit. then, run a play that gives you a shot at the end zone and if it doesn't work kick the field goal. instead carey yells at the team to rush to the line of scrimmage and spike the ball, but does not use the timeout. the team listens, ball is spiked and there are 6 seconds left. only time for a field goal try. NIU never uses their final timeout. misses the field goal and gets nothing. i bet Martin would have done the same thing.

I'd agree with that. Something like you outline in paragraph one might work if he had a decent staff in place, but instead it's a bunch of yes-men with Grand Valley ties that have only known Chuck as a boss.

Here's a screenshot of the spreadsheet with the scoring breakdown.

As always, please let me know if I've made any mistakes tallying up your scores and I'll correct them in the standings.

I could see Lester just running the time down to Zero there.

He doesn't use his Timeouts either, neither to save time nor to rally the troops.

I have to add. From an outsiders perspective, Miami played better as the game wore on.

In all honesty, if your coach went for field goals at the goal line and around the 30, who knows what your outcome would have been.

I thought Miami really showed heart. It was looking like a beat down midway through the second quarter, but your guys never gave up.

It’s always hard for Marshall to come away with wins in Oxford.

Your WR Gardner will play on Sundays.

Just in watching Martin-coached teams for four-plus years, you get a sense of horribly underachieving relative to our talent (specifically since 2016). Yesterday's loss wouldn't feel so demoralizing if we weren't 5-18 in one-possession games or 0-11 against rivals, but here we are.

I am shocked Martin's still there. How long is his contract?

Ugh, I forgot about that lovely coaching decision by Carey until I read this. One of many.

I don't get the universal NIU hate for Carey. (I see it on FB too). Up until 2016 you guys have been a MAC dynasty and are again the favorite to win the West this year. You guys are crazy for not liking him.

Most of them are also Bears fans. It's displaced aggravation. 03-wink
