Bower has still not signed the extension that was tendered last spring and practice has started. If the talk I hear from several different sources is true, the odds of him returning next year are now somewhat longer.

Is anyone else hearing similar rumors? Do you think they're true? Do you think Bower will be here past this year?

Everything I've heard has Bower leaving at the end of this season. Nothing is set in stone, of course.

Why is Bower in a hurry to leave USM ?

Who has offered Bower a position in the past?

He's not, but the president allegedly wants him out.

Wyoming offered Bower in 1996. I think there was some conversation between Bower and UH when Helton was hired, but no actual offer.

There some validity to it. Odds are it will be worked out, but there is definitely a rift there now...

Bower has had talks with several other schools in the past & has had his name brought up w/other jobs but has stayed loyal. If he leaves I don't see him coaching anywhere else. He's put a good number of years working for the state of Mississippi so he's probably up for state retierment.

If he's smart, he's put his $$ away & invested it so he's in a position where he does not have to keep coaching. His daughter is almost or is done w/school, I think if he's looking at stepping down it's to spend time on the golf course & with his family. I can't say I fault him for that.

I would like to see him hang around & get his 100th win at USM. He should be able to do that during the 2005 season.

Bower is young enough that he could do that. It all comes down to is his desire for coaching more than his desire to leave coaching.

If he stays great, if he goes there will be some big shoes to fill.

Actually, it comes down to whether higher-ups and large-dollar donors want him to remain as coach. Right now, it's not clear they do.
