Figured I'd point this out before the inevitable disaster gets blamed on Trump
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/08/22/haw...ryone.html
Quote:As Hurricane Lane barrels towards Hawaii as a Category 4 storm packing sustained winds of 155 mph, officials in the Aloha state are warning residents they don't have enough shelter space to meet the "estimated demands" of the population.
The National Weather Service's Central Pacific Hurricane Center said in its 11 a.m. ET advisory that Lane, which is likely to cause catastrophic damage with winds 155 mph or above, is located about 460 miles southeast of Honolulu and moving west-northwest at 9 mph. The storm strengthened to a Category 5 storm with 160 mph winds before slightly weakening, but hurricane warnings are in effect for Hawaii's Big Island and the island of Maui.
"Slow weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, but Lane is forecast to remain a dangerous hurricane as it draws closer to the Hawaiian Islands," the CPHC said.
On Tuesday, emergency management officials across the state urged residents to prepare to evacuate if needed or shelter in place if its safe. Hawaii State Emergency Management Administrator Tom Travis said during a news conference that the priorities for state officials are to manage shelters because "we do not have enough shelters for everyone."
Quote:Earlier this year, a state report on hazards facing Hawaii warned there are only 277,376 available shelter spaces for the islands' estimated 1.4 million people.
"Hurricane evacuation shelters are a last resort option for residents and visitors who do not have a safer place to stay," the report noted. "There are insufficient hurricane evacuation shelters to meet the estimated demand of the population and these shelters have no supplies."

I will be in Maui 9/1/18. Glad we are going next week, at least they will have a week to clean up.
So far, the storm looks like it is moving 500 miles south of the islands, but they will probably get some bad storm surge.
Sucks to be a tourist this week!

Does any place have shelter for all the population? No. The people in the higher elevations of Hawaii will probably not need it.

You can evacuate most places. Good luck evacuating an island that isn't close to any significant landmass.

Did that twice. It takes up the whole day and no guarantee that you can make it around the whole island anymore.
We will zip line down Mount Haleakala after seeing the sunrise on the 2nd.
That will be fun. I am supposed to find Hula pie as well.

Agreed, but if you are 20 ft above sea level, do you need to evacuate or need shelter?

6.3 earthquake off Oregon, making some nervous that the big one will hit California. There have been quakes around the rim of fire recently.

I don't recall Hawai'i being much of a target for hurricanes. Am I misremembering or did I just miss it? People can get complacent when it's been a while.

You do if you live in an area prone to mudslides during heavy rainfall. You know like living on an island that is a volcanic mountain during a hurricane.

People didn't think that New York was a target for hurricanes, either. They didn't have one for 30 years, then Sandy came along.
NYC had 2 Category 3 hurricanes hit in the 20th century (1938 and 1954). Sandy was just a Category 1 by the time it reached NYC.

The used to call them typhoons in the Pacific and hurricanes in the Atlantic. I think they changed the terminology

zipline down haleakala? are you going a thousand miles per hour? we saw a bunch of people biking down. that's a nice trek
sunrise at haleakala is truly a moment. we camped out the night before and rode up around 4 am curled in our sleeping bags in an open air jeep. i couldn't believe how cold it was. like you pack warm clothes for hawaii! you obviously like hawaii, have you read roughing it by mark twain? he was there when it was called the sandwich islands. he recounts his vivid volcanic moments of failed recreation. him descending into the kilauea abyss is one of the most fabulous adventure stories i've heard. mark twain stayed at the volcano house
man, i was blown away by hawaii. can't wait to go back.

Are windspeeds in a hurricane the same as one moves up the eye wall?

Kap nailed it....wind isn't going to be their issue.....gravity and loading could be monumental in destruction....

Not sure. One would think not since there's less ground clutter to draw down speed.

I was wondering if they didn't actually increase with elevation.

Every storm is unique. Typically wind speeds will be higher aloft, but a storm’s elevation in the atmosphere can change the effects even within the same town (such as coastal areas vs. inland areas). Some hurricanes drop feet of rain, some struggle to drop two inches of rain in the same spot.
There is also the possibility of isolated tornadoes along the outer bands.

Wasn't asking that.
I'm one of those guys in the bar watching the weather channel cause I actually consider myself a bit of a waterman. Hawai'i included.
Was New York mentioned in this story?
Simple ???, is Hawai'i a frequent target of these storms? I don't recall so.
But, may be wrong. Asking.
