Inside what it was like to be Nick Saban's first QB
Things must be pretty boring for reporters down in Alabama to dig up a 28 year old story about Kevin Meger. But a little more publicity for UT doesn't hurt.

I think there's so many reporters, reporting the same thing they're looking for a different angle. I think this reporter found a good one. Want to know someone, go back to the beginning. I'm not sure though if the reporter was trying to claim a connection that would predict Sabin's QB pick or admit a wild goose chase.

"Meger at times hasn't thrown as consistently as we'd like," Saban once told reporters during a conference call, according to The Washington Post. "He's a runner we've been trying to develop into a better passer."

In 1992, Meger passed for over 300 yards and the Rockets upset Purdue at Ross Ade Stadium.

Pinkel not so bad a coach either and apparently Saban's efforts paid off for Megan. 52 passes in a run-control offense and a ten minute time of possession advantage. Colleto had an undistinguished career coaching Purdue and was replace by Toledoan Tiller.

It was considered an upset but that Purdue team only finished 4-7 in a year that didn't include Ohio St. The ranked California team they had beaten, finished even worse. Rockets were better than that Purdue team, all day every day. Not an upset.

Series is 3-3. Rockets won the last meeting in 2010.

Purdue's greatest HC, Convoy's Jack Mollenkopf, coached Waite HS.(East Toledo mention).

That's pretty cool. I remember that scrap between the #1 offense & #1 defense...Dan Williams went after Kool and Meger just jumped on Dan. Both units then got into a bit, before Saban and the coaches broke it up. I think Meger and Dan were the last ones up off the ground. I remember laughing about it...Dan was a good 280 and Meger may have been 175 at best...I think Dan was stunned that Meger even attempted to go after him. Otherwise, he most likely would have torn Meger limb from limb.

They need stuff like this on the under-stand walkways in the GB. That whole thing, both sides should be memory lane, home or away.

I started following the rockets when Kevin was QB. I've always thought he was under rated in the annals of rocket lore. Good to see him getting some past due publicity.
