I'll bet Dandy Randy of TV5, BamaAnne, two city council members, a county board member and several Ladd board members will be celebrating bigtime at Calaghans tonight over this move by the city council.

RE: Breaking: South Al Stadium Proposal Fails
The stadium will be completed but there will be a couple adjustments from the original design.

1. The administration building to be built at the north end of the stadium will be scratched. Savings of close to $6 million. This is the major adjustment that will reduce the stadium cost.

2. Slight reduction in size of the locker rooms and a few other areas. Seating, video board (which will be largest in Sun Belt according to Daktronics), concessions, restrooms all unchanged.

BOT meets next week to approve financing and final stadium design.....Stay tuned..

You guys are better off going it alone. These joint U and City projects always seem to wind up with both parties unhappy with their commitment. Take your time and do it right. USA will be better in the long run.

Don't be so quick to wish for "progress". Building a new stadium is great and all, but part of Mobile's allure is that it isn't the same as everywhere else. As a resident, it likely is troubling, otherwise its a solid place to visit for a change of pace.

Seriously, thank you for your concerns, but you apparently do not understand our plight. Ladd is in need of several million dollars to keep it from falling down and heading to the junkyard, and USA desperately needs an on-campus stadium.

If Ladds fall downs after USA moves out I'm ok with that, I just don't want for anyone to be there and get hurt.

I always wondered why a new stadium wasn’t involved with the startup of the program.

I figured a team would want their own stadium. Something of the Coastal size.

At the time (2007), the initial cost of starting the program was in the millions and Ladd-Peebles was available and took some of the burden off of start-up costs as they offered it rent free for 5 years.

I do know what you mean...Downtown Mobile is comparable to a laid-back New Orleans and it's getting better every year with new restaurants and bars opening up. The downtown and midtown areas of town will not be losing that allure any time soon, as it's woven into the fabric of this city's history. Mobile is behind on things such as pedestrian/bike paths, recycling efforts, and general lighting/drainage improvements though. Providing a clear path to downsize Ladd in partnership with new the development of an on campus stadium would have been a win for the city because it'd reduce maintenance costs for much needed upgrades to Ladd. Mobile just has a hard time letting go of the past. Just because Ladd is historic doesn't mean we should keep it. In this case historic just means old, rusty, and mismanaged.

I have a feeling he hasn't been there.

You are absolutely right. Ya'll need to get out of Ladd as soon as possible.

What is Ladd going to be used for once USA's stadium is built?

High school football, and could have been used for minor league soccer.

So is high school football going to generate enough money to cover the basic expenses?

Is it a given that the bowl game, senior bowl and the high school all star game will move to USA?

Question 1, no, high school games will not cover the expected $225 million in expenses over the next 10 years. That is what the city says it will cost. I think there are some city council members that may have some benefit in that $225 million.

Question 2, the Senior Bowl as the premier NFL combine game will move from Ladd, one way or the other, either it goes to the OCS or it goes to another city.

It is shocking to me that Birmingham has finally decided to invest in UAB as the economic engine in BHM, and Mobile just turned their nose up at South. Embarrassing.

Yes it is but it is not like Statesboro has bent over backwards every to help out GS. IIRC there was descent from using local money to help pay for the new shooting complex that police officers were going to use to train yet GS pumps ten of millions into the local economy...If not GS Statesboro would be Metter or any other po dunk town struggling to boost the tax base, of course some of the locals would probably prefer that.
