To endow a $750,000 annual salary (not including benefits), that’s a $15,000,000 investment at a 5% annual return.

I've always thought that would be a cool idea. Didn't know it ever happened anywhere. Very cool that one of our own has done it.

Stanford has done it to several levels. Coach Bloomgren was the Andrew Luck Director of Offense at Stanford before he took the job at Rice.

What does this mean? That family will pay his salary?

They make a one time donation of a lot of money and the money is invested and the principal remains while the earnings will be enough to cover the salary.

Except his salary is $1M+, so it was a $20M+ donation.

Wow. I'm assuming all of their athletic scholarships are endowed as well?

The university pays around 10M/year into the athletic department. Since we’re private that all comes from our overall endowment so indirectly yes. I believe a few of the student athlete scholarships have names tied to them but I’d have to find the sources. However the goal of our AD (from Stanford) is to endow specific positions and I believe eventually create an athletic department endowment (Stanford was around 500M last I read) so all the people on the academic side can’t complain about “wasting money on sports”.

Rice now costs $63k/year with living expenses. Every full ride would require about $1.5M to endow.
