A while back, VT closed in their north endzone with aluminum bleachers and made it their student section. Students on aluminum bleachers can get loud. That would be cool if there was a tunnel through those bleachers and the players cam out where the students were.

Investing to improve gameday quality/ experience is what should be done, if anything. We are a long ways off from needing to expand.

So the players run out of a tunnel from the top of the south endzone and jump down to the field?

Hope we have a lot of depth this year.

First paragraph was about south endzone and if it could hold bleachers on top. Second paragraph was about north endzone and bleachers, similar to what VT did. And of course tunnel in north endzone bleachers. Sorry if it was confusing to you.

Scary af tbh

A little deceptive considering we had just come off a 12-2 season, which lifted season ticket sales, plus the big push to sell out the ECU game.

The 2012 average was skewed by the 34K for the first home game (ECU). Still had 23K+ for each game after that (including the last two). And we averaged more in 2013 (1-11 after 0-12) than last year.

Some of this is due to a drop in college football attendance nationally. But dropping to 21K (in a year in which we had an SEC team at home) is more than just that.

While I would not go so far as to say it is as bad as 1-23, but consistent, uninspiring mediocrity is a dangerous place for a program to be. At least when you are 3-9 or 4-8, people are pissed and aware that changes need to be made.

I agree with the post above me that suggested chairback seating. The last thing that any of our facilities need is more aluminum bleacher seating. If there were money to spend on the football stadium (and there shouldn't be, as whatever we have to spend on facilities should go to Reed Green), it should go to upgrading what we have now.

There was a plan at one time to convert the press box to club seating/suites and build a new press box on top of/above the upper deck. I have no idea if that’s still a thing or not.

We should demo the whole upper deck, both. Convert the rest to some sort of indoor practice / athletic complex. Then go build a new stadium at the old Van Hook site. Do a future plan for infrastructure and whatever else we can fit out there.

If our fans looked as hard to build up our program rather searching to run I think down, we would be in a P5’s league in no time...

There shouldn't be another dime spent on football. That ship sailed along time ago. I've always said the Elam Arms site should be where a multi-purpose basketball, concert venue should be built with a parking garage where the parking lot is. Have the City in on it. There is no reason in the world a city the size of Hattiesburg does not have a concert venue. Basketball is where the $$$$ is in college athletics for those schools not in the ESPN conferences. (6000 or so for Bball & 7500 or so for concerts etc.) Hell there could be indoor football, minor league hockey, d-League. Options would be endless. Hockey would be big in Hattiesburg. Oh, and allow drinking. Sell that land to the City with an agreement for no costs for the school to use it.

They just need to reno or demo the yurt. Here's a question: when they built the Payne center 20 something years ago...why didn't they connect it to RGC and do a complete reno to it and just make it one big facility?

Probably because there is a goofy street around the whole thing.

I wouldn’t think that there would be much interest in coming to Hattiesburg for bands on tour when there are 3 metro areas with more than 400K within two hours. Hell, I don’t think Mobile ever brings in any arena-level acts.

Don’t see the H-Burg supporting any minor league teams either.

Your idea is basically what USA did with Mobile for their football stadium. But the city had enough incentive with a bowl game and the Senior Bowl. Edit: Actually, I just saw that Mobile voted not to put up 10m of the 70m cost. So, yeah, that’s how hard it is to get a city in on a project even with incentive and a very popular mayor’s support.

Eh, I’d disagree on the concerts. They come where money is. That’s why Brandon can bring in Dave Matthews, Imagine Dragons, and a lot more big names to an amphitheater. They’re willing to pay.

Agreed. There are bands/groups out there that us old folks have never heard of. You bring in 3 at a time. You rent it out for conferences etc.

There are plenty of bands that come to smaller venues. It's a college town, so you should be able to draw and get a crowd for popular acts. The biggest problem with that is that tickets aren't cheap now days and that might be tough for the college crowd.

Also, my comment above about Van Hook site would be with the idea to have basketball up there too and whatever else we had room to build. I'm fully aware that's all just pipe dream talk, but it'd be fun to see if money was no object.

You’d be surprised how many college students magically find money when it comes to concerts.

Sure. Plenty of smaller bands at clubs or venues like Saenger Theatre.

Your arena/amphitheater bands (eg, Dave Matthews, Chris Stapleton type acts) are going to big metro areas or festivals, though.

no shite....

oh yeah, there's the hard rock venue down yonder a piece......

they screwed this pooch long ago....

from the rowdy rail, to Frampton to Sugar Ray vs. Hagler, it was once a blast....

they have no clue what they're doing with that venue other than letting it rot like RG....

Somewhat disagree.

You can get bands coming in and out of New Orleans or on their way to Houston, Memphis, Atlanta, etc.

You may not always get them on a Fri or Sat night but you can get bigger names here for midweek concerts for sure.

Heck, ever since we had Bobbie Gentry and Glen Campbell at RG, it's been all down hill...
