I've always judged a programs brand by how much I have to explain who you are or where you are to people who don't follow sports, or only casually follow sports. If I don't have to explain then you've got a pretty good brand. If they look confused then you don't have a good brand. LOL.
Me too. It's a simple measure of familiarity.

It's one of those things we just always have to explain.
In Tennessee, the three regions(grand divisions) of the state are legally defined as west, middle and east and are represented by the three stars on the state flag.
Quote:The three grand divisions, East, Middle, and West Tennessee, are formally defined in state law at Tennessee Code Annotated Title 4, Chapter 1, Part 2 ("Grand Divisions and State Capital")[2] as the "eastern, middle, and western" grand divisions of the state. The law lists the counties in each region.
The boundary between East Tennessee and Middle Tennessee is on the Cumberland Plateau, which was a major barrier to travel and commerce during much of the state's early history.[3] The boundary is close to the line between the Eastern and Central time zones. All but three counties of East Tennessee are in the Eastern Time Zone, while Middle and West Tennessee are entirely in the Central Time Zone. The reach of the Tennessee River that flows northward to Kentucky from Mississippi and Alabama demarcates the boundary between Middle and West Tennessee.
Quote:The Tennessee State Constitution mandates that no more than two of the five Justices on the state's Supreme Court can be from any one Division. The court must also meet regularly in each Division in the cities of Jackson in West Tennessee, Nashville in Middle Tennessee, and Knoxville in East Tennessee.
On top of that, Murfreesboro is literally the geographic center of the state. The marker for the exact center is maybe a quarter mile or so north of campus.
This is very cool. I knew a little, but not most, of that. Thanks for posting it.
Do you know what the general population percentages are for each of the three regions?
I have no idea. Just going off my gut, I'd put it at middle ~40%, east/west ~30% each.

i'd think southern miss would be the top as well
sucks north texas isn't higher thought of, but due to the past, no reason for them to be higher.
fiu/utsa certainly the last 2
think odu is too high
You can certainly make a strong case for NT to be much higher, just like fans of other schools could for their favorites.
First, NT has played Div. 1 sports much longer than most of the conference. NT has 4 national champion teams. Yes, it is in golf and a long time ago, but what other CUSA teams have ever won a D1 national championship in any sport? Throw in location, size, academics and a long list of accomplished alumni and the case for NT is strengthened.
NT should be good again in football, but both basketball teams are going to be a lot tougher next season. That is speculation just like some points in the original list.
This topic was based on national perception and the average non-CUSA fan is not going to be impressed by any league team. FAU and their one season of good football. WKU primarily based on their great MBB teams and Rice because everyone has heard of Rice would be the most nationally recognized of the CUSA programs.
As far as USM being the nationally most prominent CUSA team, I don't see that at all. They are seen as a lower tier good regional program by most of the country who are even aware of their sports history. Probably better viewed than most conference schools, but not much of a blip on the national scene.
Old Dominion has more national championships in field hockey then North Texas will ever have. We also have a D1 national championship in women's basketball (to complement the multiple AIAW national championships they have). And the men's team got a DII national championship the last year before we went D1.
I chuckled at the field hockey part.
Dude mentioned 4 golf titles of all things, and then threw down the "non-football/basketball championship" gauntlet. I simply picked it up.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To take this question one level higher, which G5 team has the best brand?
I go with Boise State.

Technically, Army isn't G5 because they're an independent.

Are those NCAA national championships? Or school club national championships? For example LA Tech has won 33 national championships in Powerlifting, but the sport isn't recognized by the NCAA. Tech and Texas A&M dominate the sport.

They are recognized by NCAA and ODU, UNC and Maryland are the top three schools to play the sport ever in terms of National championships but recently Connecticut is starting to dominate it.

Definitely Boise State. They built a strong brand with that upset over Oklahoma.
Man, Marshall was working on becoming “the first” Boise when we came up. But the transition from Bobby Pruett to Mark Snyder really held us back.
It’s a shame thats all the AAC schools who saw us in CUSA 2.0 will remember, our down swing.

Sailing national championships are awarded by the ICSA and not the NCAA.

And we have 2 WBB championships sponsored by AIAW but that was in the 70's before the NCAA sponsored women's sports.
So 10 NCAA National Titles - 9 Field Hockey and 1 WBB
