It is fascinating to read the plethora of OSU fans attacking McMurphy on Twitter, arguing that this story "has nothing to do with Ohio State Football, Urban Meyer or with domestic violence." This clearly shows a pattern of troubling behavior and tendencies for Smith, and such an individual should not be coaching or be around students.

If I were the head coach I would question what kind of discipline he could instill in the roster when he has very little discipline himself.

A few points if I may.

1. Slang terms and references to genitalia are forbidden under the AUP. We are a public site and your time here is covered by sponsors.

2. Most universities, like corporations, have some kind of clause in the employment contract that covers lewd and lascivious behavior. When he was in the White House he was there as a representative of the school.

A personal lack of boundaries or one's personal definition of morality will always be subject to the standards of the society around you. I'm betting most Amercians, and Ohioans would take offense at these antics whether they are technically crimes or not, and therefore the damage to the pubic image of the school should mandate termination.

3. Urban has had discipline issues at both Florida and Ohio State, having assistants like this are likely part of the problem. I don't have knowledge of his time at Utah.

4. Any university's sports culture has always had an element of in house control of issues. So it would be quite reasonable for Smith's wife to have contacted Urban's wife and not have gone to local police first. Those who tend to air dirty laundry to public sources don't find a welcome inside such programs. The wives know this and therefore those saying it should have been handled by the police are hanging the victims out in between what everyone knows is the reality of college sports programs and what should be the ideal, but which never is, especially in smaller university towns. So if we want to help all of our programs we should focus on getting rid of the "in house" "damage control" mentality of both the athletic programs and the universities.

The days of managing personnel at big-named schools and conferences getting away with the cover-ups of sexual improprieties and abuse, directly or indirectly, are closing.

Some big-named schools can still get away with profound recruiting violations and academic fraud, by using influence and power in the oversight bodies; but covering-up or facilitating human victimization based on physical/sexual assault and harassment no longer fall in the "let's squash this" domain.

It’s social media. These things have been happening for decades. Just like sexual harassment and bullying. The only difference now is the affected party can now go to Twitter or Facebook and have a platform where she/he can be heard. In the past, the school, in complicity with the local authorities, local media and boosters would’ve just put it under the rug and none of these things were made it known to the public.

If Zach Smith was doing exactly the same thing back in 1985, no one would ever found out. Men being men, probably she deserved it or she should know her place as a woman and wife. It would just been business as usual for a big program such as Ohio State.

Sorry, but the more that comes out, the harder it is to believe that NO ONE knew what was going on or did anything about it.

It seems that there's three possible explanations.....

1) Willful ignorance - People knew and rather than do something about it, pulled a hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. Or put their fingers in their ears and hummed if you prefer.

2) Cover up - People knew and did what they could to make sure that "evidence" was conveniently disposed of or buried.

3) Negligence - People knew what was going on and did nothing.

In any case, it doesn't look good for tOSU and probably doesn't bode well for many members of the staff.

Be interesting to see if someone ends up going down if they choose to take others with them.
