Can the AAC be rated a top 4 league in 2018?
If so, what kind of OOC records would we need to have?

Doubtful, but for SMU to contribute we would have to beat UNT (probable CUSA West champ), TCU (ranked in top 3 Big 12), Houston Baptist (FCS) and play Michigan #15 tough in Ann Arbor. A huge ask.

In reality no, no way we catch up with any in depth...
But the same reason the MWC can “compete” with us on some years. Is that everyone only cares about the top of your league ...when Boise is great the aac and mwc are competing.. when in reality our depth is probably blowing them away
In that same sense we could use that to our benefit in regards to the P5...there isn’t a projected elite pac 12...and Oklahoma is the only projected great big 12 (and they are switching qb)
UCF, Memphis Houston .. depending how it plays out could be seen asa Batter top than those leagues of the chips fall the right away

Well I don't think it would take undefeated to be a top 4 league.

with nine teams capable of playing up to their potential, anything less than four bids in 2019 would be a minor setback. a lot of programs are headed in the right direction. never thought i'd say it. i'm mostly worried about smoo

Football: Not in 2018. Probably not ever unless there's further realignment.
Basketball: Not in 2018-2019. Absolutely yes in 2019-2020.

Then what do you think?
I guarantee even if every team in the conference went undefeated in OOC, there would be National media members saying... well they didn’t schedule Alabama or Clemson. They picked teams that are rebuilding.

Agreed, and it is sickening. But it would be sah-WEEEET to be atop the Massy Index, though, which would be a fact no one could deny.

If UCF, USF, Memphis, and Houston can sweep the OOC schedule and not lose conference games except to each other, we'd probably finish the regular season with 4 ranked teams. Still not enough to be top 5, let alone 4 (unless the PAC continued their bowl performamce last year into this season hah).

Yes. If the AAC goes 49-0 00C (Navy plays 5) that will put the AAC at 4th above the ACC and PAC
No question.

I do think we would have to be undefeated or reeeeally close to it OOC (75% or better vs the big boys), AND the teams we beat also need to turn out to be pretty good. This is just as important for the lower teams as the better teams in this regard. The whole thing is relative.
For instance, just using examples that I know of. Consider a scenario where both ECU and UCF beat UNC-Chapel Hill, and they end up not losing another game and winning the ACC. Same if SMU beat Michigan and Michigan wins the Big 10 with 1-loss.
However unlikely, there are a few scenarios where it would be tough to deny that we're a top 4-5 league. Just takes being really really good top to bottom, which we haven't been recently.
The whole thing falls apart when...
SMU loses to TCU/Michigan
Tulane loses to Wake Forest/Ohio State
Cincy loses to UCLA
ECU loses to UNC/VT
Tulsa loses to Arkansas
UConn loses to Syracuse

RE: Can the AAC be rated a top 4 league in 2018?
To beat one of the P5 (likely the PAC), you need at least one team in the top-10 and four teams in the top-25.
To finish in the top-4 of conferences, you likely need two teams in the top-10 and at least 5 teams in the top-25.
The entire conference wouldn't have to go undefeated in the OOC, but four of your best teams would need to go undefeated in OOC and you would also need a couple other big OOC wins.
This year provides a decent opportunity to make some noise as a conference. But, the top teams of the conference would each need to win a couple of big OOC games.
