Open Response to Enquirer Sports "Columnist" Paul Daugherty
[Image: pdoc-enquirer.jpg]

Hey Paul Dik (Doc) Daugherty! I appreciate your unbiased opinion and your honest negativity. I don't know what your salary is for writing articles for the Enquirer but something tells me it's the most you can ever make and this is why you're still working in Cincinnati for the Blandquirer. See below my responses to your opinion piece...

Quote:I’M HEADED SOON TO HIGHER GROUND. Not that higher ground, smart guy. The one over in Indiana, where UC football works out. And I have a question:

Who cares?

I care. A lot. I know thousands more do as well. I attended UC when the football program looked and performed like Division II, Tim Murphy was the head coach and the Nip was 1/3 full. People cared EVEN THEN Paul. See, I appreciate the lengths our university has invested to bring our program this far forward since those days. I still care living nearly 500 miles away in North Carolina.

Quote:I don’t mean to be insensitive with the question. I’m curious.

Yes. Yes you did mean to be an insensitive snark. Did you take notice after Butch Jones' first season at the helm finishing 4-8? How about the Reds? They've done quite well the past four seasons. Lots of butts in the seats in that beautiful stadium. Do you care? I'm curious.

Quote:I just don’t feel any excitement for UC football around here.

No problem. Keep your flaccid energy and enthusiasm when sitting behind your keyboard. I'm excited for the team to take the next step and show flashes of a steadying rebuild and retooling after the previous regime left a mess. I'm excited to see some of the talent take the field and perform including the DL, TE's and RB's. Oh, are you aware we have a 240 pound frosh running back (Tavion Thomas) who runs like a deer? I'm excited living 500 miles away when traveling to see the Cats is not as easy as it is for you. Thousands more are excited to put the past two seasons further in the rear view mirror.

Quote:Even the salary-stealing Tuberville came with some buzz. We had Gunnar Kiel to salivate about. At least for a little while. Now. . . what?

The buzz leaked after Year 1 and deflated like a whoopee cushion after Year 2 once the fraud was truly exposed. The damage done after Year 4 is still impacting us this year and far offsets any positive energy felt when the Ghost of Cadaver's Past came to town. Why even bring this up? You're really twisting the knife with a smile.

Quote:Fickell is understated. He’s not a salesman, which means he better start winning.

Salesman? How about first repairing and rebuilding relationships that were damaged by the previous regime? Some Ohio high schools didn't want us on their property. Recruiting talent has picked up. Seems to me you have to have a "sales pitch" to bring the recruits to our non P5 program. I'm sure the pressure to win is felt and duly noted. Thanks for the job performance demand and insight Captain Obvious. Wait, I thought you didn't care?

Quote:Meantime, what does UC football do for you, right about now?

Right about now? I need my Bearcats football fix yesterday. September 1st can't get here fast enough. Amped up and rarin' to go! Meantime, what does that Blandquirer keyboard do for you, right about now? Your creative juices? Fair to middlin'? What impact has your opinion writing done for the City of Cincinnati vs. the impact of our football program over the past two decades? I'm curious.

Well done and well said. I too cannot wait for UC football to start, I too have watched it through the lean times (Dave Curry) and the glory days (Brian Kelly) and look forward to the glory to come. In spite of the ridiculous P-5 vs G-5 situation, this too shall pass, I look forward to our very bright future and many exciting Saturdays at Nippert Stadium and it doesn't matter one bit what Paul thinks or says or writes. UC football is very relevant and UCF from our conference is the defacto National Champion by any reasonable measure of what happened on the field last season, so it can and will be done here, keep the faith!

The "who cares?" comment from him is rich with irony, considering his ongoing love affair with a dying sport like golf and the saccharin drivel he writes about his children and dog. "Who cares?", indeed. How this guy continues to draw a paycheck while good reporters leave or get laid off is beyond me.

Kudos to the OP. Did you send that over to the Enqurier?

I'm curious Daugherty has any inclination of the buzz around UC football. The man works out of his house in Loveland, and stays mostly at home save for the occasional trip to Shooter's where he is surrounded by his fellow Ohio State fans.

To prove him wrong, UC FB will have to post a series of CONVINCING winning records and WIN bowl games of some consequence...otherwise, he's basically correct.

We did it from 2006-2015. Beat teams “of consequence” as well. What was his and your excuse back then?

Very articulate response UCGrad1992....props.

Except that Doc is correct. Now not for you, or me, or the few members still posting on Banter, 247, etc.

But the Buzz for UC football was put in ICU when we lost the biggest game during my 40 years I've been around the program. We lost the game of Realignment. CBJ bailed, so did most of the good coaches. We got retirement Tommy. Bohner renewed his contract. And now Fickell is an unknown - but his few minutes of hope were destroyed by a C-USA team from Huntington that proved UC was totally unprepared and not capable of making adjustments. The season was over. Fans left after the 1st quarter from that point on and many left their seats unused. I know - never missed a minute of home football. The Buzz pronounced dead.

Outside this group, and mainly through Chad's diligent work since Fickell likes to keep things a secret, no one is talking UC football. The Spring game could have been a marketing opportunity but it was a dud. UC should be embarrassed how poorly the athletic department is managed as a business entity when on the same property is the Lindner Business School.

Think of all the hardcore guys on this board that are gone. Most football fans in Cincy are more concerned about Colerain and St. Xavier. The bandwagon fans have turned their attention to FCC and some silly hope of a better Bengals experience. And there is the Urban thing.

Ask someone wearing the C-paw this week who is Desmond Ridder, Tavion Thomas, or Lorenz Metz. Maybe that's not fair. Then ask if they know Kimoni Fitz, Garrett Campbell, or Tyrell Gilbert. Heck, I even have no idea who is handling the placekicking duties this season since our oft-injured Centerville kid left town.

Our beloved Bearcats lost the most important game. Got shutout! And it gives Doc an easy way to be right when he writes.

No he's not. His teams are the Redskins and Pirates... and he's not even trying to hide it either.

His excuse will be that he's a columnist, not a reporter. He's in it for his opinion, not facts.

I used to read his column before they started charging for that slop. I'd say it was about 50-50 on whether I agreed with his columns or not. Don't really care what he thinks anyway...

Was waiting for the standard Rag and Not Duane responses.

P-Douche was writing this when UC was in the BE, beating "named" schools and going to meaningful bowl games. Back then the mantra was the "named" schools are not big time enough. The BE is the worst of the BCS conferences.

Buzz is an interesting term. Media bias is an interesting concept. P-Douche reluctantly covered UC in the BE and found just as many so called flaws then as he does now. His narrative is plain and simple, anything UC is to be described in negative terms. Missing out on realignment is just low hanging fruit to bash UC Football and its supporters.

Frankly, this piece was directed at UC supporters. I find this odd, when the Bungles are the Bungles. You cannot find a Reds supporter with a search warrant. FCC is still in the honeymoon phase. There is also that common urban myth that most people care about high school football.

All the hard UC and non hardcore UC fans I know are excited and ready for football to start. For people like P-Douche and the Enquirer its open season on UC fans. I cannot wait for the constant negativity and constant belittling.

His writing sucks. Rather than trying to give readers any insight into any particular topic, seems like he spends more time coming up with stupid similes and metaphors. His takes are as stale as a loaf of year old bread...dammit, I did it myself.

He's a Cincinnati sports fan so it's hard to blame him.

His writing sucks. Rather than trying to give readers any insight into any particular topic, seems like he spends more time coming up with stupid similes and metaphors. His takes are as stale as a loaf of year old bread...dammit, I did it myself.

How would you feel if you were irrelevant in a dying industry and life passed you by without anything to show for it? Probably a lot like Paul02-13-banana

Back in the day when you could comment on his column through your facbook page, I once jokingly said that Andy Dalton was the Drew Stubbs of the Bengals.

The next week he stole that from me and used it in his column.

Doesn't he like, owe me royalties or something?

I managed to get press credentials for the last game in Nippert before they remodeled the press box (overtime loss to Louisville). I was placed next to Daugherty. I surprised to find him a pleasant guy who was rooting for the Bearcats throughout the game.

Totally different in person that his writing makes him out to be.

Interesting.

So, i wonder if this sorta article is just his schtick at this point?

Either way, he's not even good at his job. His writing is boring.

My expectations aren't very high, but I am as excited for a season to start since BJ's last year.

Wonder why he was even at the game. Guess the squirrel he likes to watch in his backyard was hibernating.

I'm curious Daugherty has any inclination of the buzz around UC football. The man works out of his house in Loveland, and stays mostly at home save for the occasional trip to Shooter's where he is surrounded by his fellow Ohio State fans.

My parents lived in the same neighborhood with him for 15 years. As a teenager I'd run by his house twice a week and go to the pool three doors down from him every day in the summer. As an adult I'd walk my parents' dog past his house at all hours of the day year-round. I've played hundreds of pickup games and been to hundreds of holiday parties and get togethers at dozens of houses in that neighborhood. Yet I never even saw him, not once.

I find it hard to believe that he has his finger on the pulse of anything farther away than his television set.
