Still don't have a kicker
Our kicking game was bad the previous two years and looks like it might be more of the same this year. The guy missed an easy chip shot after we blocked Iowa's punt and then was way off on the longer FG before the end of the first half.

At what point do we say forget FGs and just go for it? (Like that high school football coach who doesn't punt or kick FGs)

We need to sign the kid who kicked 8 FG in IHSA last weekend.

I expect a miss every time now when we line up for a field goal.

Gantz will be fine. He’s a proven kicker st Cincy. Both kicks were pulled left, that’s just a kid who was overamped. There will be a couple of huge kicks he makes this year.

Hope so. Those missed kicks destroy momentum.

Even more so than destroying momentum, they take the life out of the defense. I honestly don’t believe the defense doesn’t get tired in games like this. I think they get mentally defeated. When they see their offense fail over and over, they just lose that edge. There a huge difference in going into half with a lead instead of being down three. Then the offense fails miserably to start the third and the defense knows the games over.

Agreed, The momentum would've been much more different if the team went into halftime 3-3. Gantz spent the entire summer bragging about making 50-64 yard kicks without a problem but he gets choked up on a 33 yard kick with practically no wind?

If you are going to talk crap you need to back it up and both him and Smith didn't.

Where have you gone, Steve Azar?

Not only did Azar have a strong leg with a lot of accuracy, he would actually cover and tackle on the kickoffs.

He was the last of his breed.

RE: Still don't have a kicker
I think the most frustrating thing about struggling to make field goals last year is Carey would still try a 35-40 yarder when it was 4th and 1 after two previously missed attempts.

RE: Still don't have a kicker
Going into this season, it is apparent from Carey's comments that once NIU reaches the fringe of FG territory, no more attempts will be made to move the ball, so Gantz better be accurate from 40+ or any points at all will be hard to come by.

I hope you’re right. Our offense needs it badly right now.

Great leg has nothing to do with it. If he has the mental make up of a 4 yr old and breaks down when there is pressure, then his great leg is worthless.

Too soon to draw any conclusions about our kicker. We need a larger body of work.
