Yeah. Pastner stunted his growth and development by trying to make him Mike.Conley type instead of an Iverson.

I remember booing him big time whenever my school played White Station. He’d proceed to put on a show and torch us pretty good haha

Not being made to play defense in high school really hurt him in college. I went to a WSHS/Ridgeway game his senior year year and was thoroughly unimpressed. I would have liked to have seen him if Coach Tippett had still been there.

I'm one of the biggest Josh Pastner critics you'll find, but I don't know if he "ruined" or "misused" JJ. JJ had a pretty nice college career all in all.

At his size and with his struggles shooting the 3 ball, he was never going to be John Wall or Steph Curry. Unfortunately many of us held him to that unfair standard throughout his career, and we didn't fully appreciate him then the way we do now looking back.

RE: Joe Jackson was insane in high school
IF JJ duplicates his shooting from outside his senior season he has one of the greatest seasons in the history of Tiger basketball. By the time he left he was head and shoulders better than he was as a freshman and was a very competent point guard. His game picked up big time after Pastner rightfully benched him in the Bahamas. After that he was a different player, had a different attitude and played much better.

RE: Joe Jackson was insane in high school
Here's what I think. Pastner was an overthinking nutso.... He tried to control the game...hence he controlled the_____ out of JJ.

A lot of BB happens too fast. No time to think. Good BB depends a lot on physical instinct and natural ability...Joe came in with that. Pastner was supposed to direct what was there and improve on it, not beat the natural talent into some submissive thinking state.

The big issue was Josh would pull Joe whenever he made a mistake. Instead of letting him play through it and learn from it, Josh would yank him. He hurt Joe's confidence often.

JJ ruined himself with his attitude. He spent too much time listening to his homeys and failed to mature as a player or a person. Took grandma to sit his ass down and set him straight.

Josh did pull him more than others.

It makes players second and third guess themselves.

Joe needed Tubby's no-time-out style of coaching.

JJ played 32.6 and 33.2 minutes per game his junior and senior seasons, leading the team by a fair margin both seasons. Pastner didn't use him properly his first two seasons and let Crawford do whatever he wanted, but his junior and senior seasons, he didn't do that at all with JJ.

I took the thread title to be literal, which would explain why he was an emotional wreck in college.

RE: Joe Jackson was insane in high school
Joe was a fine player here and put up good numbers. Pastner didn't know how to use the guy, no doubt about it. He did, however, play a ton of minutes. I thought he slowed the ball down, in a big way, as a college point guard and had terrible timing throwing the ball to the post. Never cared for his attitude either.
Good player and carried the team at times, clearly. An all-time great as a Memphis Tiger? No way. But in the Pastner era he was invaluable.
As someone said, more of an Iverson type player but was miscast with more of a Mike Conley role.
