Painful to watch but skip to the last minute of regulation and see the obvious goal tending not called on Loyola that denied us three straight National Championships. Announcers definitely not on our side! But we did miss a free throw that could have ended it.

I remember that night well. My wife and I will be celebrating our 54th wedding anniversary in July, and it all started with a first date that March evening at Zimmer's Wine Cellar (near today's Rookwood Commons), where we shared a bottle of Dry Catawba. As luck would have it, I found out later that she had been crowned XU's 1958 homecoming queen, so I guess I can take credit for a stealing a great gal from right under their noses.

I also remember the 1961 and 1962 championship victories against OSU and the spontaneous celebrations which ensued. Local breweries, and there were a bunch of them in those days, were handing out six packs on Fountain Square. Good times!

Thank you for these videos, they are great. I mean, except for the loss. You know what I mean.

Were the goaltending rules different then? Because if they weren't, you are right, that was an obvious one. WTF?

How bout George Wilson with the hard put-back dunk to start the game? Pretty bad ass. Was not expecting that.

Was that Larry Shingleton who missed the FT near that end of regulation that would have put them up 3 and likely won the game? Anyone know why they got the ball to him on the inbounds in an obvious foul situation? He did not appear to have a good or confident stroke. Or is that incorrect?

And the defense on the last play of regulation after the missed FT is hilariously bad. They have 3 guys + the shooter in the lane going for the rebound, then one guard goes for a steal in the backcourt, and Loyola's able to pass it down and get a good look to tie. We take for granted how hard won conventional wisdom is.

Thanks for sharing these memories--among the building blocks of CINCINNATI, one of the greatest programs in college basketball history. Even those grainy images of the celebration in the Armory Fieldhouse are worth a thousand words to those of us who love our University.

Onward and upward--go 'Cats!

Yeah you used to be able to touch a ball after it hit the board and avoid goal tending if hit was below the rim or deemed not to be coming down. However it looks like goal tending to me which would have gave us a five point lead under a minute to go. Yes I think it was Shingleton who missed the second free throw after Loyola had called time out. But in the last two minutes of regulation Tony Yates missed one of two and Tom Thacker missed the front end of a bonus so foul shooting let us down. It is hard to see on the video but I have read that there was a obvious traveling on Loyola bringing the ball up at end of regulation to tie game.

Yes Wilson was tough. Parade Magazine put out the quoted high school All-American teams in those days(No McDonalds then) The first team was only five players....Wilson and Bonham were both on the first team in 1960 so by that benchmark we recruited two of of the top five players in country that year (those days will never return I fear) Interesting John Thompson was on the Parade second team that year. Jeff Mullins and Connie Hawkins were on the first team with Wilson and Bonham. Interesting to look at how good our recruiting was in those days (due quite a bit to the Oscar effect ) On the 1961 first team we signed Ron Krick and second team Don Rolfes.

Great story, Hank! Cheers to the two of you.
