Is FAANG in College Football's Future?
Is FAANG the future of college football realignment? The author of this linked article below thinks so. Grant of rights start expiring in 2023. If this guy's right, what's coming is unlike anything we've seen before because the money could be much bigger than what we've seen before. But not because of ABC/ESPN, FOX, CBS, NBC. Those guys are paupers compared to who's probably coming to the table in 5 to 7 years.

In short, internet broadcasting of football games doesn't hold a candle to what's coming next. Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google (the infamous "FAANG" stock companies) and other extremely wealthy & savvy high tech internet media entities are looking to get involved in college football, basketball and sports in general.

As you read this article, please understand that these FAANG type companies are seriously more liquid and wealthy, with a far greater reach around the world, than the conventional media companies. Five years from now they're only going to be much wealthier when the grant of rights start to expire and they're going to be shopping for content.

Again, if this guy's right, it's going to be a monumental money grab by these extremely wealthy companies (e.g., Apple, as a company, is now worth a Trillion dollars), and conference affiliations for the P5 schools could be in serious jeopardy. Who knows what this means to the G5 conferences and schools?

IMO, this author could be on the right track. I recommend reading this article and take some additional time to look at the comments. The author is good about re-engaging commentators to discuss points and clarify. If nothing else, the comment thread is more intelligent than you find on most sports boards.

So being as we're one of the first conferences to air games on Facebook, we're basically the guinea pigs that won't get paid.

Good post HogDawg.

If you look at Wall Street Journal article on College Athletics brand value, there are some heavy hitters in every P5 conference and few dead weights. Will these streaming services negotiate with individual schools?

Ohio State is more valuable than all of the AAC schools combined. Some of P5 schools are extremely valuable while G5 not so much.

It might even out the low tier P5 with G5 though

RE: Is FAANG in College Football's Future?
First off, I doubt Facebook makes the cut in 4-5 years. The other four companies aren't going anywhere, but I think You Tube and even Hulu have a better chance of being in the mix over Facebook.

But secondly, I'm not sure if sporting events will ever command the audience that will get those companies to pony up the big bucks. For one thing, their demographic is a younger age group than your typical sports fan. But more importantly, the whole appeal to streaming is to watch stuff on your own terms - some people binge watch a whole season in one marathon session, and others just watch a bit here and a bit there (and also watch on some very small screens which doesn't lend itself well to sports viewing).

I could see some sports niche programming show up on these channels (Hard Knocks-type shows on college football and basketball teams). And then I could see major events occasionally show up on Amazon Prime like a college football game or two (ESPN can't control all the bowl games - that's been one of their downfalls anyway). Maybe Apple or Netflix takes over the NCAA basketball tournaments. But as far as individual football games, I don't see the only viewing option being one of these outlets. Sure a game here or a game there, but not an entire season.

The other issue is that these channels are world-wide programming homes, and NCAA sports don't have the appeal to foreign audiences.

I could see the Olympics end up on Amazon, Apple or one of the others by say 2024 or 2028.

So now some of you are complaining Judy wont be able to get CUSA on Facebook, Twitter, stadium?

I thought that's the complaint this time, that CUSA is on those formats? Make up your damn minds.

But honestly the biggest problem isn't Judy, even if shes low key and boring and looks stupid sitting in a toy jeep. The problem is UNCC, Rice, Marshall, Western, Middle, FAU, FIU, S.Miss, Tech, UNT, UTSA, UAB, UTEP, ODU......

No one really wants to see any of us play. Life gets easier once you stop blaming everyone else. But the real problem.

Yes, you are probably correct, once those formats gets the big boys, CUSA will be pushed out. Just like espn did the SBC

RE: Is FAANG in College Football's Future?
I don't think FAANG really is the future. It is so out of the realm of what their business is and now to compete with ESPN+, Stadium and each conference having a digital network. They would have to go big and spend a lot of $$$$$. Facebook tried for the NFL but lost.
The one thing about Facebook games is you can watch without an account. Facebook showing live games is about trying to stop their loss of people closing their accounts or try to gain new ones. I don't have a Facebook account and would not open one just to watch games if they ever force you to login to watch.

This will finally bring an end to over-the-air broadcasting being the lead media channel. Games will be streamed on the internet (as they are now) ubiquitously and fans won't have to search for obscure OTA broadcast channels. It won't matter what "market" you live in, if you have an internet connection in the middle of the Pacific Ocean then you will be able see your games each week.

I've been streaming games for four years now. I do not care if we all have to be streamed now.

OTA TV will never end and it is actually getting stronger (with cord cutting accelerating). Digital TV has changed the game and actually saved OTA TV. Wait till OTA stations broadcast in 4k
