Would Marshall consider playing Ohio as their season-ending rivalry game.
It would be similar to how Georgia plays Georgia Tech, South Carolina plays Clemson,Florida plays Florida State, and Kentucky plays Louisville at the end of the year.

When Marshall was a member in the MAC the first time (about 1954 to 1969), OU and Marshall played their final game against each other in the late 1950's through about 1970.

RE: Would Marshall consider playing Ohio as their season-ending rivalry game.
For 6 of our first 7 years in the recent MAC run, Ohio v. Marshall was the last scheduled game as well* (*2001, we were scheduled to finish with Ohio but after 9/11 a non-conference game was added to the end of the year after games were canceled). I think Marshall vs. Ohio is one of the most historic, if not the only, true non-conference G5 rivalries perhaps outside of Cincinnati/Miami-OH, so there is meaningful significance in the Battle for the Bell.

I think the reason it WOULDN'T make sense in this era is that in the most recent 6 game series played with all games in September, Ohio v. Marshall were relatively strong gates for each school, while the Thanksgiving weekend games (at least noticeably at Marshall) tend to be our smallest crowd in a given year - a trend even when Ohio was the year-ending game. Having Ohio as the 2nd or 3rd game of the year probably sells more tickets at both schools than Thanksgiving would.

As a fan, I would not object if it were the final game of the year.

Marshall and Ohio should play every year.

I think Marshall should just move back to the MAC. CUSA is simply not good enough for MU.07-coffee3

We're less than 90 miles apart. We should play every year. Has nothing to do with conference affiliation. The same way you play SMU and Rice plays Houston. Those are proximity games and we have 100 years of playing them under our belt. Don't be an ass.

And UNT should move back to the Southland. Southland wasn't to kind from 1983-1994 to the then NUTS. Only 3 playoff appearances and 3 losses in the 1st round. 1987 loss to ULM or should I say NLU, 1988 loss the Marshall and 1994 loss to Boise.

See two can play those petty games, just make sure you are better at it.

They're back on the schedule in 2019 and 2020. September games though.

Marshall should play Ohio every year for the same reason MT should play Memphis. Teams with great rivalries are hard to come by. Non-Cartel teams should always seek to boost interest in their programs and excite their fans. These kinds of games accomplish both goals.

Marshall's longest football series is with Ohio U and they have played a total of 59 games with the first game played in 1905. Marshall second longest series opponent is Miami of Ohio with 44 games.

Did I say UNT longs for the days of lining up against Lamar or ULM? No. We’re happy in CUSA. But all we hear on this board is how Marshall, USM, and UAB wishes they were in the AAC with their old compadres. Quit crying like babies and strive to make CUSA better, stronger.07-coffee3

You have to understand where all that comes from Green. USM, one of the founding members of CUSA, has tons of history with those AAC squads, Marshall since moving up has always been a (then) CUSA type program that played in a watered down MAC (at that time), so once it finally happened, Marshall ended up where they should have been, nevermind that in most of the bowls while in the MAC, Marshall played CUSA programs and had some history established with ECU. UAB, again, very old member, specifically in basketball. You think there isn't sore feelings for getting left behind. While we can get our football brand back, we lost a ton on the basketball side of things, with perception anyways.

CUSA can continue to renew its strength, but that requires our bottom teams to step up and be competitive most years, not just a year here, a year there. Can't be losing to FCS schools, or buffalo etc if we want to appear to be above all that. Consider this, most schools in the AAC other than temple and navy, were CUSA schools. What happened to media deals once the realignment was finished and new members added? Money talks, there weren't enough USM's, Marshall's, etc to keep the brand/image strong. Will it get there, I think so, at least to MAC level at some point, but CUSA was considered overall the best G5 conference most years before it got gutted, and now we banter around with the sunbelt on who has the best deal. That is a hard, very hard pill to swallow for long time members.........We all want CUSA to be better and regain some prestige, takes time, and some just aren't patient, it is what it is. I think some better options where available than what we went after for replacements, but that is just personal opinion and a conversation for another day.

As far as the MAC, well, money talks, so we aren't considered their equal, they have cracked the NY6 bowl barricade, we never have. Our champ lost to buffalo last year...Does Marshall wish to go back, no clue, don't think its in the plans for now, but if things don't improve a ton in this conference in the next few years, who knows what will happen, maybe even a resorting of the belt and CUSA happens for all anyone knows.

Back to topic, Marshall and Ohio should play every year, no excuses really, or alternate every other year with miami and ohio since both are historical rivals for us.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing about NT. Only a matter of months before that B12 invite comes. COGS

Screw UNT and the horse they rode in on. You have yet to do crap at the IA level and your basketball has sucked year after year after year. Congratz on the CBI Championship but you did lose 7 games to schools with a losing record last year including 11-20 UTEP and 6-23 Charlotte.

UNT was a market school nothing more nothing less. And well you might do better playing Abiline Christian and Lamar.

As far as playing Ohio, it should be a yearly game in every sport the 2 have in common. the schools are 88 miles apart. And Miami OH and Toledo should be rotated in football.

My feelings exactly on USM playing Tulane and South Alabama every year or at least maybe rotate to where we alternate them every year or other year.

for example:
2019 - at Tulane
2020 - host USA
2021 - host Tulane
2022 - at USA

USM and Marshall have tried. However, when Banowsky finally left, and the presidents could finally change the direction of the conference, who was chosen for conference commissioner?? Judy McCleod. I rest my case.

I think all he's saying is we belong in a conference with them, whatever conference that may be. I'd much rather have them here than go back there.
