RE: Would Marshall consider playing Ohio as their season-ending rivalry game.
The Marshall Ohio U is a good rivalry, but Ohio U's biggest rival is Miami of Ohio; not Marshall. Ohio U and Miami have played nearly twice the number of football games 94 as Marshall and Ohio U have played 59 games. The Miami/OU football game has been played continuously since 1928. Marshall stated the "Battle of the Bell" idea in the 1990's or 2000 while Bob Pruett was the Marshall coach.

Ohio U has a long relationship with fellow Ohio MAC members and they will not leave that situation.

Non-Cartel teams should always seek to boost interest in their programs and excite their fans. These kinds of games accomplish both goals.

You're sort of shortchanging the Marshall/Ohio rivalry, which has double the meetings and are separated by about a third of the distance when compared to MT/UM.

It would be much more akin to if MT and WKU found themselves in separate conferences.

But as you and I both know, that's never going to happen. I don't ever see any of the original MAC schools leaving and Ohio has been in the MAC since 1946.

I don't care how much each school there knows they could do better in another conference. They are all happy a s pig in slop being in the MAC. Ever so often you see a thread pop up on the NIU or Toledo board about how bad the MAC is but then again Toledo has been there since 1950, NIU was in the MAC from 1975-1986 and went Indy and joined the Big West Conference from 1993-1996 and rejoined the MAC when Marshall did in 1997.

The take away is you will be able to look at the MAC in another 30 years from now and my guess it looks the same.

I agree their rivalry with Miami OH out dates the Marshall Ohio game. But just like the Marshall Miami OH rivalry the Ohio Miami OH rivalry is a much different game and situation. Both Marshall and Ohio would rather leave Miami OH in tatters and leave them the walking wounded when done with them. The Marshall Ohio rivalry is more of a respect rivalry, almost friendly.

I think all he's saying is we belong in a conference with them, whatever conference that may be. I'd much rather have them here than go back there.

Agree, too many of the MAC schools treated us like garbage, not sure why we would ever go back.

And UNT should move back to the Southland. Southland wasn't to kind from 1983-1994 to the then NUTS. Only 3 playoff appearances and 3 losses in the 1st round. 1987 loss to ULM or should I say NLU, 1988 loss the Marshall and 1994 loss to Boise.

See two can play those petty games, just make sure you are better at it.

Did I say UNT longs for the days of lining up against Lamar or ULM? No. We’re happy in CUSA. But all we hear on this board is how Marshall, USM, and UAB wishes they were in the AAC with their old compadres. Quit crying like babies and strive to make CUSA better, stronger.07-coffee3

Marshall and Ohio should play every year. It’s a mutual respect. Draws good attendance. We’re 90 miles apart and is an Appalachian rivalry.

The 2 schools should play in every sport they have in common every year, all the way down to tiddly winks and jacks.

Really, Ohio doesn't belong in the MAC, but that can be said for more than one school there. If Kent, EMU, Ball St., maybe even Akron(would change my mind if they ever could draw a crowd) would be kicked, the MAC would look pretty good. I always respected Toledo, BGSU, Ohio, NIU, WMU and sometimes CMU, liked playing Miami for the hate game.

The MAC is the most stable of the G5 conferences and I dare say more stable than the Big12. It's a bus league comprised of like schools IMHO. Ohio relates more to northern ideology than southern. No one in the MAC is going anywhere.

That being said, I would love to have OU, Toledo, and Miami and n CUSA, but that ain't happenin' either.

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall during the expansion talks to see if perhaps CUSA approached one or more MAC schools.

No doubt, I do think CUSA 2.0 there were other MAC schools approached, not sure about 3.0

Another thing to consider is CUSA used to have a bunch of northern schools, like cincy, Marquette, etc

Toledo and Miami OH was approached in 2003 along with Temple as a package deal. That was after Rice, SMU, Tulsa, UCF and Marshall was added and when TCU took off to the MWC.

Miami OH said NO basically immediately, Temple was ready to pull the trigger and Toledo started crunching numbers until the MAC gave them an impossible deadline to stay in the MAC or leave.

The next week CUSA pulled the trigger on UTEP instead.

RE: Would Marshall consider playing Ohio as their season-ending rivalry game.
I learned this bit of trivia today...

Marshall has the highest bowl winning percentage of all schools that have played in at least 10 bowls (.833).
Ohio U has the worst bowl winning percentage of all schools that have played in at least 10 bowls (.273).

And to tie this back to the NT injection earlier in the thread, I have to cheer against North Texas ever making another bowl game because another NT bowl loss means you'll then have 10 bowl games and would then snatch that distinction away from Ohio.

Good night...
