I honestly forgot about most of them until this thread because they don't get much airplay. Don't know if the vcr in the basement still works or not but I have still have quite a few old tapes down there. Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten put out quite a few films that I liked (Citizen Kane, Third Man, Shadow of a Doubt). Found 39 Steps, M, Maltese Falcon, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Rebecca, Sullivan's Travels, and a few more.

My wife hated watching most (all?) of those with me.

All of the films you listed are very good. I'm sorry your wife does appreciate them. I've always liked the old films. These days I have a hard time finding good shows to watch on TV, and most films coming out seems to lack quality plots or rely too heavily on low-brow humor. Hollywood seems to be running out of good ideas. The old movies still entertain me.

The Big Sleep will be on today at 11am central on TCM. Bogart and Bacall at their finest. Martha Vickers also gives a great performance.

Fun Fact: Sonia Darrin in the center of the photo is that last living cast member.

With plenty of good football on TV, you might want to set your DVR. The Big Sleep is must see Noir.

Saw that today at noon. Was killing time before my Bearcats game. Forgot about the risque sexual tension when they were talking about gambling on horses. Bacall was what about 22 and Bogart mid 40s when this came out? Good show.

IMO, black and white movies give off a better vibe for anything film noir. They just do.

On that note, I think it was "Detective Story" from the Animatrix ( the collection of animated shorts based on the "universe" or inspired by The Matrix trilogy) that had a very film noir vibe and was also in black and white.

You should see them together in "To Have and Have Not" from 1944, which was Bacall's first film. Bacall was only 19 when they filmed the movie. Bogart went on to leave his wife and married Bacall in 1945.

The Orson Wells masterpiece "Lady from Shanghai" will be starting at 9pm central on TCM. It is a great film. There isn't much on TV tonight, so I hope you get to see it.

RE: Film Noir Discussion Thread
Friday will be a great opportunity to see a few of the greatest films ever made. TCM will be airing three of my Top 25 best films ever...

11:15am central- Double Indemnity a great film noir starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray, and featuring a screenplay written by my favorite writer, Raymond Chandler.

3:00pm central- Citizen Kane Arguably the greatest film ever. Enough said.

5:15pm central- The Locket a great film noir thriller that features Robert Mitchum. This under rated noir is much darker then probably ever film of it's day, and has more in common visually with modern thrillers. The Locket is a cerebral plot driven film propelled by flashbacks within flashbacks. It is a must see, even if you don't normally like classic movies. If it were re-released today, it would top the box office. This film was seventy years ahead of it's time.

I liked both China Town and its sequel, The Two Jakes. Wish there was a good BR print for those as I have the dvds.

I like The Two Jakes too, and I agree, they should release it on Blu Ray. You should watch Poodle Springs, staring James Caan and Dina Meyer. It was made for HBO, but was well done, and in the same style of the Chinatown films.

Noir double feature tonight on TCM.

Act of Violence (1949) 7pm central
In a Lonely Place (1950) 8:45pm central - In my opinion, Humphrey Bogart's best film. A must see for any film enthusiast.

John Wayne was the longest blockbuster actor from his films from 1930s to the 70s. Others just quietly disappeared or cast in B movies in later years.

Gene Autry and Roy Rogers more of westerns. Buster Crabbe was versitile going from Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon to a cowboy.

I would put Clark Gable among the best. Gone With the Wind sold more tickets than any other movies.

Bing Crosby, Fred Astire and Bob Hope are the best with singing, dancing and comedy. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis the same

Jack Lemon and Tony Curtis do both comedy and drama.

Horror you got Lon Cheney, Lon Cheney JR, Claude Raines and Vincent Price.

You got Erol Flynn as a early heartthrob for the ladies in many roles as a pirate to Robin Hood type of characters.

Any of these and your top 5 could be the best actors of all time in the golden age.

Remembering Julie Adams. Sadly, we lost her Sunday. She was in classic films of the 1950s including The Creature From The Black Lagoon, Bend in The River and others. She was in movies alongside Glenn Ford, Jimmie Stewart, Elvis, Tyrone Powers, Charleston Heston and others.
