The Carolina Shoe story
https://www.greensboro.com/sports/accxtr...d71e7.html

1. How did this start?
On the evening of Jan. 12, someone who identified themselves as Chris Bullock, “a lifelong UNC fan,” emailed a generic account for athletics director Bubba Cunningham with concerns that basketball players had sold their shoes to local sneaker boutiques after seeing several Instagram posts. Within an hour, his executive assistant, Molly Norton, had passed it along and Cunningham quickly reached out to Marielle vanGelder, who leads the compliance department. VanGelder replied that she was already in contact with the football equipment staff to determine who had received the shoes and that the basketball program had not received them.

In the email, Bullock alluded to “scrutiny” the program had faced in recent years and attached a photo of one of the Instagram posts, belonging to Greensboro’s Request Boutique, which advertised the Jordan 3 UNC Player Edition sneakers for $3,500.

2. What action did Carolina take?
The next day, UNC officials began requiring all athletes and staff who received exclusive shoes to return them to the equipment staff. By Jan. 16, 92 of 101 pairs of shoes were accounted for. Those whose shoes were not returned faced further questioning.
3. How were the shoes sold?
Fifteen players were found to have sold the shoes for cash. Three players sold them to commercial outlets for $1,300, $1,500 and $2,500 and were unable to get them back. Two players sold their shoes to commercial outlets for $2,300 and $2,500 but were able to retrieve the shoes and return the money they received. Six players sold their shoes to teammates for prices of $300 to $1,000 and were unable to get them back. Four players were able to retrieve the shoes after selling them to teammates. Nine pairs of the Jordan 3 PE remain unaccounted for.

Request Boutique in Four Seasons Mall in Greensboro was formally named in the documentation provided to the NCAA, as was Raleigh’s SirCastleTees.

As of Monday night, two pairs of the shoes were available on eBay for just more than $600 and $1,100.

How do you sell shoes to your teammates, and NOT be able to get them back after the sh!t hit the fan???

As far as transgressions go, this is very minor. But I don't get this part, at all. What douche-y teammates.

Funny how only 9 pair were unaccounted for.

15 sold shoes.

So we don't know how many shoes were sold, if any shoes were stolen and sold, or if any of the shoes were traded for drugs. Hmm.

Actually this could be charged as a crime in NC. The crime would be conversion. Fortunately for UNC-ch, all NC District Attorneys are UNC graduates of some stripe. You could make the case that the shoes are actually UNC-Ch property, much like a laptop or lab kit given to a TA/GA and that once the TA/GA disposes of the item, it's a theft. That's not going to happen in this case, but let that be a lesson to those at ECU or App State !

I know this stuff must happen a lot (not just at UNC). At what point does the stuff actually belong to you?

That's a good question. That's probably when the item become de minimis, unless the item is in fact a gift. If you are to use it again, it's not a gift. You run into the possibility that for graduating seniors they are gifts. For red-shirts - they might be UNC-Ch property.

I would compare it to stealing a beef roast from the cafeteria. If you steal it during serving hours - it's a thing of value. If you steal it after the cafeteria closes for the day - probably not. Carolina's hammer lock on the local and state courts mean that nothing is going to happen, but in other jurisdictions around the US, there could have been problems.

For too long Carolina has allowed sleaze to hang around the program, hand around Loudermilk, and hang around the practice areas. Now that the media will look, and now that the internet puts everything out into the open UNC-Ch can't hide behind the holier than thou lie. They have to operate in some light. They will continue to have these problems until they kick the sleaze off campus. The sleaze is not students and I say this as an alum, a taxpayer, and a parent.

I don't know man ...

I've never had ... nor will I ever have ... one pair of shoes worth $300.

But if I was given a pair while in college, that I could turn around and sell for $600?? Those things would have been sold FAST.

This is seriously such a small issue.

I still don't get selling them to teammates, who then could not give them back once things got squirrelly. What did they do? Eat the damn things?

I'm guessing the resold them for a profit.

I think I'll run by Julian's this afternoon in Chapel Hill and see if they have any of those shoes. 03-lmfao

Or they spent the money and couldn't buy them back from the teammate.

RE: The Carolina Shoe story
It is such a Carolina thing to, trying to out due their fellow conference mates on being "free shoes university". But seriously this is stupid, if a player wants to sell their own items I don't see what the big deal is.
