What was the show about? What do folks remember of the script, formations and songs?

Honestly, if we knew, we may be less wtf about it.

Not sure what was going on.

RE: The MOB
Why doesnt Shepherd partcipate with the mob? Seems like this a requirement for all music departments in Division 1?

Because the Shepherd School is a "conservatory" that aims to train professional classical-music performers. It's not interested in training future music educators and high school band directors, as many D-1 ESUs do.

Conservatory comparisons are mostly with D3 schools:

Oberlin College (where JK was athletic director for a number of years) has a world-famous music conservatory ... and a student-run marching band that looks even more pathetic than the MOB. (Its website was last updated in 2013.)

The University of Rochester has the equally famous Eastman School of Music, which has programs for New Music, Early Music and Gamelan ... but not marching band ... although it does have a Music Teaching and Learning program. UR does have a full pep band, but it does no marching.

RE: The MOB
Thanks but why was he hired anyway then. It seems like Rice could have both. Rice use to actually have a marching band in the past. For the MOB I was hoping they would do a sarcastic show about Briles; maybe a student in jail surrounded by a bunch of pregnant co-eds. :).

My recollection was when we moved to C-USA the conference had a rule where bands couldn’t make fun of the opposing school.

RE: The MOB
Question. How does the visiting band taking up time affect things? Did the lack of time make it more difficult to develop a theme? Or does the shorter show mean we just kept the best jokes and more time would actually make it worse?

RE: The MOB
Reasons given for the MOB shows being incomprehensible and unengaging:
1) It's Lebron's fault.
2) It's the Shepherd School's fault.
3) It's the opposing team's band's fault.

It there any remote possibility whatsoever that the problem with the MOB shows lies with the MOB?

RE: The MOB
It's odd how an innocent question about time can be twisted into "It's the opposing team's band's fault."

Given how we justified the last decade of football, the Greenspan regime, Ben Braun and his collosal mess, tenure equivalent for Williams etc etc... recognizing and accepting responsibility isnt one of our strong suits.

I think one of the answers would be that having 50-70 members is a first step to be incomprehensible and unengaging.

Also, last one I remember seeing it seemed there were more 'community volunteers' than students.

Those first two really help unlock the 'wow, this is unengaging and not really worth my time' first step --- at least from this consumer's POV.

I dont know how you create interest *within* the student body for a revival. I am finding I am a tad old and way to crotchety to offer anything that would be of any value on how to view the mind of a millenial or younger.

I don't know either, but your question gets to the crux of the matter....in that I think the current format: scatter, make a quip, play a short song; repeat X2; Louie, Louie.....is not only no longer funny or quirky, it's downright old-fashioned.

If you dont have the bodies, at the outset it seems kind of sad.

The scatter, quip, song --- wash rinse repeat could be effective imo. If it is understood and not sad looking.

With 50 bodies, and 20 of them obviously pulled in from the civvie population, it just has the air of a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom ranch with crabgrass and painted garbage cans on the front porch nestled in Memorial.

It is even worse when one has to ask wtf are they talking about?

If that was a rule, the Mob broke it more than once, i.e., Tulsa Dante's Inferno show, North Texas (tipping your server - aka NTSU music school graduate), etc.

RE: The MOB
I thought this show script was pretty good.
There were a couple of nice zingers in it.
Not sure if it's posted anywhere, and I never got access to the script writing page.

In the SWC era, from which The MOB sprung, both bands were allotted 8 minutes for their shows.

That gave us time for 4 formations and 5 songs (counting Bonnet, and later Louie, for the exit).

Having a visiting band provided contrast - the same old thing that they were doing, versus the very different thing The MOB was doing.

Now, what The MOB is doing is the same old thing, and we only occasionally see a visiting band, and that seems more entertaining because it is the different thing. Gone are the days of the students chanting "High school band! High school band!" at the other band (gone is not a bad thing, but it is a sign of our complacency).

Also, C-USA and Rice have been allotting 6 minutes each to the bands, and even 6 minutes to The MOB even when there is no visiting band. That chops one or two segments out of the show, giving us less to work with, to either develop the theme, or just squeeze in another joke.

This past week, we thought we would have 8 minutes (it's still an option, if the athletic department doesn't have something in addition to the bands for the 20 minutes of half time), but it was cut to 6. Instead of chopping each the three songs we were planning to do enough to fit the time constraint, Chuck chose to cut one entire segment, and its song. We got to play complete charts, something that is quite rare in this time-constrained-by-marketing era.

I'll readily admit that the scatter-form-script-music/action [repeat] format is tired. We've tried other things, but they proved even more confusing to the audience.

The modern stadium sound system helps us try to get the joke across, but we still haven't gotten anyone to explain why our announcing volume is much less than the regular game announcing. Everything seems to be the same, except the person. And it's not the person's voice - I used to sit next to J. Fred to do the announcing, and we were not different in projection (that was the old sound system) that I could tell.

We've got a similar thread running in the "I bet we can't get a million fans for Rice" FB page/group, BTW.
