The MOB
When I was a kid, The MOB would play Phantom of the Opera in The Tunnel before it entered the field. It was bonechilling cold. It was an amazing entrance. I also remember with great fondness the playing of "Call Me Al," by Paul Simon. I want to ask anyone who's affiliated with The MOB to please pass on how much it would mean to me if I heard this again. I honestly long for it. Those tunes take me back. That entrance was amazing in the 80's. Grungy are you there?

RE: The MOB
When I was in the MOB in the late 80s, pretty sure we were playing "Also Sprach Zarathustra," entering from the tunnel. Don't remember playing Phantom of the Opera, though that could have been before I started (87). And yes, the way it builds in that echoing tunnel probably sounded cool. It really works with a bigger band, though. It was 200+ members in those days.

Better yet, you can tell the MOB yourself: just send a private Parliament message or an email to MOB director Chuck Throckmorton. He is a Parliament reader (cthrockmorton), and his email address can be looked up on the Rice staff directory (https://search.rice.edu/advanced/)

Good luck!

RE: The MOB
The MOB has not stopped playing "Toccata" in the tunnel, before entering the field. I can't recall a time when we did not.
"Toccata" is a Ken Dye arrangement of the opening of Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor".
There was a time when we knew the people running the scoreboard and stadium sound system, and we could arrange with them to turn down/off the audio feed long enough for us to be the only audio feed. We haven't had that luxury of late.
(You Can Call Me) "Al" was in the book last season.
(It's one of my favorites, too.)

+1. My wife and I will get there early! It was great meeting you at the UNT game last year. Keep up the good work!

"Tocatta" is it. I just listened to it on youtube. Maybe "Phantom" was played after a big first down? I remember hearing it.

We have a "Phantom" tag, performed after some plays, but it's not the staple that has been played from the tunnel.
There are a lot of tags (very short pieces of songs), that fit the amount of time that The Man gives us after plays.
When The MOB gets to play is entirely controlled by The Man.

RE: The MOB
There's an opportunity here for Rice to do something unconventional and hugely entertaining, while also addressing the absolutely critical issue of gameday attendance.
I have to believe that even the most dedicated, classically-trained Shepherd School student would love to shake it off 3 or 4 times a year and play soemthing fun in front of thousands.
Short and informal pre-game concerts of semi-classical popular music (like Phantom theme for example), accompanied by an electric guitar and drum set perhaps, could be both rousing and beautiful, and blended into a dramatic finale just before the teams enter.
It could become an extremely coveted goal for select local high school bands to join in.
It could even become a "must-see" type of thing that could go viral in effect, if done right.

RE: The MOB
I remember a MOB show in Austin in the late 70's, during the height of the progressive country wave. A giant longneck beer bottle was fashioned, MOBsters formed a human bottle opener, and a fire-extinguisher spewed forth suds from the open top....while an electric guitar + MOB played London Homesick Blues. It was awesome, and at that moment made Rice look like the coolest school in the country.

Sigh...
That's a song I miss...
It's from the Andy Anderson arranging era, so the arrangement may be one of his less-than-spectacular quickies.
I don't think we've played it since the year you're remembering.
P-512 in The MOB's library.
P-516 is "Oh Where, Dog?" so London Homesick Blues was in the book in '73.
(I just happen to have a copy of "The New Book of the Library" (post flood) within arm's reach of this computer.)

We asked The MOB to play Notre Dame's fight song when we played Kansas coached by Charlie Weis in 2013. They did and Charlie did not appreciate it.

RE: The MOB
Maybe the MOB can do a "Throwback Thursday" show and do all the old favorites mentioned in this thread?

The list so far of MOB Classics we'd like to hear again:

Viva Max March
London Homesick Blues
Toccata and Fugue in D Minor
Al

Others?

That would be a heck of a halftime...at least for those of us of a certain vintage.

I'd just like to see the script that would tie them all together. Kind of to MOB as "Mamma Mia" is to ABBA.
