EDIT: Along with Woody Hayes, Bob Knight, the Fab Five and Illinois Basketball teams, and this newest allegation with Zach Smith, the Big Ten really should be rebranded as the conference of chokers.

Wasn't IU's previous football coach forced out a year or so ago because of player mistreatment? And then landed on Urban's staff @ OSU? Truth is stranger than fiction.

Yep, and Illinois' former football coach Tim Beckman was also forced out due to player mistreatment as well.

I think the B1G is winning easily as their scandals are all some serious crap.

The ACC's scandals are all just good, clean, fun cheating.

That isn't even bringing in the OSU basketball fiasco of the 90's that got them probation and reductions for like 5 years and the Rutgers basketball stuff (also player abuse)...it's insane how much B1G schools have been involved in over the last two decades.

Yep. Any scandal pulls back the curtain on the dark, backstage goings on in big time college sports. Pretty sad really. But when I stop to think of the coaches who have won a national championship in football or basketball the past few decades, who among them hasn't been tainted in some way before or after the trophy ceremony? I'm hard pressed to come up with just one name.

How about Kerry Coombs at OSU, and Urban Meyer at UC? That would be great for our game against OSU in 2019.

Kerry Coombs is the herpes of Bearcat Banter.

are you implying that some of us enjoy herpes? though i've, never contracted the disease.... in the words of henry miller, let's hit the town and get a giant dose of clap!

For anyone who thinks that big time football is the answer for any university. OSU is getting roasted nationally because some superfans showed up to rally support for Meyer. Less than 200, no students and most likely few if any actual alumni, but that's not the national story. It's about an out of control football culture and crazy fanbase.

I was with a handful of Ohio State grads, and big football fans, when images from the rally came out. To a person, they were appalled. And they should have been.

When I lived in Ohio, it was pretty much a law of physics that the more obsessed and in your face an OSU fan was the greater the likelihood that they either never attended the place or were one of the open admission types who OSU would flunk out their first year. The alumni, even the ones who were big fans, seemed to be much more laid back about it and able to put football into perspective.

Judging by the signs at the Urban Meyer rally, it was a certain type of person who showed up the support a guy who potentially did nothing about domestic abuse. Meyer has been a snake his entire career, but this likely wont bring him down, and in a year it will be forgotten.

Agreed 100%. The alumni are generally pretty reasonable, but there is a lunatic fringe of the fan base that is mostly hillbillies with no college education. And while OSU fans are definitely football crazy, Columbus is a large enough city to not be insulated like State College where a horrifying amount of Penn State fans continued to support Paterno after far worse than what Urban is involved with.

Big time football doesn't necessarily equate to an out of control culture.

We were big time there for a couple of years and I rather enjoyed it. It did nothing but good for the university IMHO.

A couple of years doesn't create the t-shirt fanbase that OSU has. I think a more apt comparison would be UC basketball and the frenzy in Cincinnati and the split among fans and alums caused by Huggins' ouster.

Penn State freaking honored Paterno's legacy at a game 2 years ago. I'd be ashamed to be associated with that school.

Not to mention that some of their trustees are alumni elected, and all of those, since the scandal, have been Paterno truthers including one of his kids and some lunatic who dresses up like Paterno at rallies.

Bolded, excellent observation.

And that lunatic fringe is exponentially larger (hence more visible) than most other schools simply because of the size of OSU. It's also a result of fawning media in a state much too large to have a single P5 program commanding all the headlines and attention of many Ohio residents looking to cling to some collegiate bandwagon.

Meyer is going nowhere. In the end they'll find some mysteriously missing paperwork and someone else will get fired, quite possibly Gene Smith.
