RE: Tax returns
(08-02-2018 08:43 PM)Native Georgian Wrote:  Way back in 1967, the Governor of Michigan — former auto-executive George Romney, who was deemed a “liberal Republican” in the parlance of that era — was running for the 1968 GOP presidential nomination. He wasn’t getting much traction, and he hit upon the idea of releasing his tax returns (12 years worth!) as a way of illustrating his more-pious-than-thou transparency. The voters were not impressed and his candidacy died in the early primaries.

Fast forward to 1975, and now it was the Governor of Georgia — retired Navy Lieutenant and farmer Jimmy Carter — seeking a presidential nomination, and also getting nowhere (or so it seemed). For reasons very similar to Romney’s, Carter released his federal tax returns. But America had been through a wrenching political scandal in the interim years, and suddenly Carter’s transparency struck a lot of people as both sincere and relevant. He won the election. That established a trend that has been very hard to stop.

For 40 years, basically anyone who wanted to be taken seriously as a potential president basically Had to cough up their federal returns. Even people like George Romney’s son Willard who avoided doing it as long as possible, finally bowed to the media pressure and released his returns for at least one year, maybe more.

But then suddenly, Trump said “F that, I’m not letting you see them” — and he won, anyway. It’s too soon to say for sure; we’ll have to wait and see how the next couple of presidential campaign cycles play out. But I think it’s possible that Trump has belled the cat and future candidates are going to be much more willing to say “None of your business.”
Always seemed stupid to whine about tax returns. Probably the least incriminating thing consciously or unconsciously a businessman does is a tax return. Just another dopey battle cry of the left. Every time I hear them clamoring for a tax return it makes me think of this.

This is yet another piece of the right-wing’s hypocrisy. You all justify anything Trump does simply because he does it. He thinks you’re mindless fools, and you constantly prove him right. He claimed he could shoot someone in broad daylight and the right-wing would still support him. He was right. He’s actively working to tear down the media, law enforcement, and the judiciary. You all cheer him on. You’re all completely un-American. You’re all traitors to American ideals. It didn’t take much to get the right-wingers to hate their nation because hate is what they’re all about.

He's tearing down the judiciary and he's tearing down law enforcement? Really? Exactly who, how, when, where, and why.

Again, do you realize how bad your smug, arrogant, condescending hate plays with everybody other than the 20% or so who are with you on the loony left? I don't think you really have a clue how badly that comes across?

Every single day the right-wingers around here hurl vile, crass hatred towards the few left-leanings posters here. You say nothing. So don’t even pretend to lecture me when you are ground zero for the problem. Your lack of self-awareness is astonishing.

So you're not going to support your tearing down law enforcement and tearing down the judiciary comments? For that matter, can you support anything in that screed?

As for your comments, fine, have it your way. My only point is that you don't seem to realize that your manner is very off-putting. If you have something of value to offer, offer it. But the stuff you are posting is just a waste of time to read.

More smug, arrogant, condescending ad hominems. Do you have anything useful to say, or are you just wanting to be a jerk and vent?
