So, you think we lose the opener? but if that’s what it takes to finish on a 12 game win streak I’ll take it :)

Yes, the opener will give us trouble. LSU is toast, though. The Tigers are such amateurs!

Presumably they spent the rest of the season trying to concoct a formation with the tight end on the weak side.

Pretty much. This is the same quality staff that called a short side fake on 4th and 16

Watching that replay is interesting. The only players that act like they know it's a fake are the holder, kicker, and play side wing. If the offensive line would have blocked/ walled off the defense the play might have worked. But the play was made by the players lined up inside the tackle. If it was a planned fake it was horribly designed- but the actions of the LG and LT make me question whether they knew it was a fake

I'm not sure what happened. A poster on the game thread (maybe gsloth?) mentioned that UTSA baited us into the fake.

Overall a disaster, but I dont think it was a audible type thing. Given how we meerkat timeouts and all that.

vs Army: 49-12 L

vs ODU: 24-21 L
vs North Texas: 30-14 L

I guess my brain wanted to forget the 2017 year, but I didn't realize that we had some relatively close losses: FIU, UTSA (down 10-7 at the half, but no 2nd half offense), LaTech (we were down 28-35 unit a pick-6 with a minute left), USM, and ODU (lost that game in the last 2 minutes).

I am not sure that the new coaching staff and special teams emphasis will be able to flip those losses, but I can understand a genuine optimism for a bowl eligible season. Turnovers and special teams were back breakers in all of those close losses.
I think my 2 most vivid memories of the 2017 season were the Smalls meltdown against Army. It truly was the worst series of downs I've ever witnessed during a Rice game. And, proud to say, I witnessed the only win of the year out in El Paso on a beautiful, warm evening at the Sun Bowl. We looked bad. UTEP looked horrid. Came away thinking that we would probably have a losing season, but maybe win 4 or 5. The next game was at UH. Miserable seats. Miserable weather. Miserable game.
This year's going to be better.

I made the argument that there is a case to be made for running it short side (where the rush/overload isn't going to be coming), but the blocking scheme is so horrible that it had almost no chance of success. Rice had enough hats available (who weren't blocking rushers) to get out there and maybe wall some things off, but the moment 2 of the 3 outside players dropped instead of engaging made it virtually impossible.

RE: Predictions
My question about that fake is what is the right side of our line doing, because it's clearly not protecting for a kick. It looks almost like the left side did not know it was a fake but the right side did, although it is difficult to tell what kind of fake play they might be blocking for.

A better question: What was the left line doing?
We were not prepared. Obviously, the line tried to make it look like a kick and the wing, holder and kicker ran an option. The problem was that UTSA stunted, the blocking was wrong and the play blew up.
If you look at it, Rice had the numbers pre-snap. The problem was the left side of the line didn't block up to the next level and UTSA stunted the tackle to the end and the wing blocked the end Rice was optioning. The end player was technically the corner and he dropped. The defender inside him was technically a LB and he dropped looking for a fake. The third defender in became the end and he stunted out for contain. Rice should have optioned him. Instead, the wing blocked him and let the play fall apart. The wing should have let him go and blocked the dropping corner. Rice's tackle should have gone out and blocked the inside dropping defender and the guard should have sealed the pursuit. This is all basic option blocking and Rice should have known who to block and executed it properly. If they would have done this, the play might have gained the first down and possibly gone the distance. And you think I don't know anything about running the ball.

The good news is that I am pretty sure the new coaches will have the team prepared to block it the right way. And in doing so, wins will come.

Left side was pretty hotly debated at the time. I don't remember much being said about the right side, but it just struck me, WTF are they doing?

Never said you didn't know anything about running the ball. And I sure never said there's anything wrong with throwing it, either.
