lol...I'd actually be pretty happy with that conference---and I'd love playing in our division (I suspect our fans would love it as well).

RE: 2023: Best of the Rest between C-USA, AAC, MWC, MAC, & SB
Even when the formula was pretty clear back in the BCS days, a "best of" conference never happened because the financials simply didn't support such a cross-continental merger.

Now, going forward, if somehow the resident geniuses can decipher a way to form a FB only consortium from the G5 that would guarantee the Access Bowl rep came from that consortium, then, you would basically have a defacto P6 football league.

It would require cooperation from all G5 leagues and permission from the NCAA, but how about a FB only consortium consisting of the top 18 G5 FB programs based on an agreed upon power rating that was set on 2 year intervals. Sorta like a promotion/relegation scenario like the Premiership. 2 divisions of 9 based on geography with the final champion getting the Access Bowl slot.

Revenue from this shared among those conferences with schools in the 18. Your conference's share based on number of schools it sends to the 18. If the Access Bowl rep came from your conference, that conference gets the biggest check.

Any takers?

Another thought. If the NCAA says no, what would stop all of the G5 to join into one mega conference in name only? Sorta like a governing body that would allow the members to make whatever schedule they wanted including the consortium?

I really get the feeling the PAC12 is going to need to expand East to survive, and they are going to need to get Texas. So, in this scenario, the PAC has added Texas, Oklahoma, OSU and Kansas. This is the new Big 12.

The only sort of "best of" that is going to make a lick of sense financially is either a group that is Eastern and Central time zone or one that is Central and Mountain time zone.

There is no one to choose from to make a best of Mountain and Pacific unless you want to boot Hawaii and one other from the MWC and be a 10 team league. If you go Mountain to Eastern there is going to be really hard travel involved.

Running north and south, you are going to need divisional play to not explode the operating costs of the MAC schools so you can make a league of 5 or 6 MAC with 5 or 6 Sun Belt/CUSA but anything with less than that from MAC isn't going to be financially feasible most likely.

I was spitballing about, if it were possible, what a FB only grouping based on a promotion/relegation system of the best of G5 would look like and how it might work keeping in place current conferences.

But, I get what you are saying in regards to a "best of" full conference idea. Any "best of" new conferences are going to be regional.

The MWC has no options. The AAC might have a couple options, but like you have said, nothing will happen if they like the new TV deal. If it is garbage, I wouldn't be shocked to see the AAC break up with the western schools making a Central Time Zone "best of" league and the eastern schools making an Eastern Time Zone "best of" league.

Boise State, Houston, Navy, UCF and USF are all selected due to sustained success in football. They are routinely near the top of the G5 and will continue to regularly compete for G5 Access Bowl slots. BYU is an immediate addition due to their historical prestige, national following and strong commitment to football. Air Force and Army are both selected because they would provide value in viewership, have a strong national following and are peers with Navy (and both have experienced some strong success in football in recent memory). Cincinnati, Memphis and San Diego State are all selected because they have demonstrated that they are capable of being a top G5 football program, have very strong markets, and have experienced national success. The 12th member was a difficult decision, but I selected Fresno State due to their similar athletic budgets to many of the other programs in this league, location, football stadium size as well as historical success. The fact that they just won ten games last year is a huge plus too.

Great list and solid logic for selecting those programs. Of the programs named, I think Fresno State and Cincinnati are the only ones I have questions about.

Just for grins, I worked up a "best of G5" f"flex conference" idea a few years ago as an alternative to the CUSA/MWC mega league.

A 9 team football only league. Each G5 league would get one ownership share for agreeing to be a part of it and one additional share for each team that would be in it. No conference could contribute more teams than what they needed to stay at 8. So using current numbers, AAC, MAC, and MWC could not have more than four selected each, CUSA could have up to 6 taken and Sun Belt 2.

As soon as the season ends take the three year power rating of every school and the top 9 "available" teams make up the "premier" league. Shuffle the line up every year.

Since then the 10 team title game might make that more palatable to have a title game and if someone can run the table maybe you have a serious argument for CFP.

Never going to happen. Wouldn't even be able to get it to the serious conversation stage but it would give you an interesting conference without disturbing Olympic sports.

The only way I could see the MAC willing to divide up with CUSA/SBC is if it was a situation where the basketball was going to be decidedly better.

If it was going to be a solid 3 bid type conference where you added the top 3-4 Atlantic 10 schools into it. Now to get there it may require going to 15 or 16 schools but the number doesn't matter so long as the quality is in place.

To me the key is having a football only conference. With an 8 game league schedule, and only four of those being away games, the extra travel is minimal, given that most schools are already flying to most of their away games anyway.

The problem with having a Central "best of" and an Eastern "best of" is that there aren't enough "best" teams to go around and have either of them be better off than they are now.
