03-shhhh03-shhhh I really had to think that one over. I do think there is a decent chance that he is not a starter. Fisher is sort of a wildcard and all the talent we recruited could come to some level of maturity this year. It really just sort of depends on how all of that pans out. I think he does have a role as a role player and provides good depth, but we just need to get some guys with a nose for the ball out there and I am not sure he is it.
I really hope another kid can outplay him for the position. I hate criticizing kids on here, I really do. However, he was consistently out of position and far too slow to makeup ground when trying to recover his position. Watch any big play and there tends to be a missed tackle or blown coverage to his assignment. It is/was maddening.

spot on post. don't like calling out our guys either. and i hope taafe fools us all and has a senior yr of redemption, but i've watched him be out of position or tentative filling rushing lanes a lot the past couple years. he also replaced jaylon coleman who was a mack truck of a run stopper so the drop-off is that much more noticeable

The Blade dude is reporting that Jordan Williams has been declared medically ineligible with a neck injury.

Also that Atariwa & Cotterman are still working their way back from their injuries, and Candle "hopes" they can return this season, but does not know when they will be ready.

"Hopes" does not sound promising. Not the early season news I was looking for. Hopefully some young ones are ready to step up.

Seems like 'hopes' does not sound good at all. Cotterman isn't expected to practice any time soon, and they are getting close to shelving Atariwa for the season. Certainly sounds like the incoming OL might be getting fast tracked to see significant playtime. I know the plan was to get the new kids on the field after the new redshirt rule came out, but I don't think they want to burn any of those redshirts by having to play any of them too much. Fingers crossed fho.

Well, the OL was exactly world beating last season. The coaching staff should have been cognizant of what they had last season and what the circumstances are coming into this season. If they did not recruit accordingly, including bringing in grad transfers or JUCOS to beef up the OL--for arguably the best receiving corps EVER, plus some more-than-a-little capable RB's--then the coaching staff is going to have some 'splainin' to do. Let's hope they brought in the next Mancz or Kaczur because everything starts up front.

Yeah Robert I want to be there when Hallet & co. do their “splainin to do”.

I think Taafe will be fine at LB. He does need to play smarter instead of like his hair is on fire. Love his hustle, but he needs to do a better job of recognizing the play and making the correct reaction to the play. Seems like he does that to compensate for what I would say is about average (or below average) speed for an inside LB. Just my observations from replays when I key on what went wrong.

RE: Potential Two-Deep
Isn't there a grad transfer offensive lineman from Florida State enrolled at UT? Did that not pan out?

I agree that they are thin on the o-line, especially with Cotterman not practicing.

Ruble, has been around campus for a while. Should be starting LT (maybe RT, but probably our most reliable pass blocker on the QBs blind side, so I say LT). 6 foot 8 and started 13 games during his RS Frosh and Soph seasons before getting beat out last year when he was banged up. IMO, might be the most important new starter on the team. If he plays with confidence like a blue chip recruit, like the guy who started as a rs freshman tackle on a top 10 Florida State team. and came back to start 7 more on a very good offense for a top 10 team the next year. like a 23 year old man? well, that could be just what our offensive line needs to come together. with our backs and receivers, if the oline is solid the new QB will have an easy job. If we have problem protecting the pocket at tackle everything gets a lot harder.

B. Ruble is a big dude (6-8 325) and should hold down that side of the line. If C. Bell, all 6-8 345 lbs. can step up, we will be OK. Getting Atariwa back healthy, will be a major plus also.

It seems like a really long time has passed since we had a "running QB." Maybe Dantin could be called a runner since he ran for a long TD v Purdue. However, he did not run very often. If Mitch G get some serious playing time, that will add a whole new dimension to our offense.

This position must be upgraded for us to have a chance this year.

I'm not chewing my nails down or anything, but the last time we saw the Rockets the offense only got past the 50 yard line twice and never even penetrated the 35. Behind that, we only got past our own 35 three times. This is why I remain concerned about the OL.
