2018 Mens BB Best Guess @ Lineups and Expectations

The big boy from LSU is going to start and play probably half the game. Maybe a little bit more . We are actually going to play a lot more zone this year. All 3 freshmen are going to play( no redshirts) The bigger of the 2 freshmen forwards is going to start. The slender one is going to play in the rotation. The Pitt transfer is going to play the 2 spot and point guard. Caver is going to play point guard but will also play the 2 spot. The Pitt kid is the quickest kid on the floor...no comparision BJ is going to rotate between the 3 and 4 spots. Green is going to be 6th man. Wade is going to also figure in the rotation at the 2 and 3 spot. Yes Carver will play but only limited minutes . He is good on defense . No offense what so ever.
I am sure some of you by now are chomping at the bit to say I forgot about the other 7 footer. Until he is declared eligible ( which does not look promising ) he does not figure in the rotation. If and it is a big if he is cleared to play he will play ….a lot. He is a player. So, let the posturing begin.Back to the playground with the I did...you did not..did too!!!

Thanks for the helpful info. Who is the starting SG then? Godwin or Kithcart? According to your summary: PG - Caver, SF - Stith, C - Robinson, PF - Ezkipe. Green is 6th man. Rotation: Wade, Reece and Carver.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2018
A zone makes sense if we are trying to keep the 7 footer out of foul trouble.

Without him our front court is paper thin and heavily reliant on underclassmen and once again, this is all also assuming he’s going to be able to have much more impact than he ever has before in his college career.

So many unknowns going into year 6......

I appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

The fact remains though that if Dickens can’t play this year, we are most likely once again not an NCAA tourney team.

Agree or disagree?
Much to the dismay if my eternal optimism you're probably right. Could we? Sure. How likely? Not nearly as high with him.

(Thanks!)

It’s almost August 2018 and we haven’t made the NCAA tourney since Blaine Taylor was sober. What else do you want to talk about?

To his point I'm going to split this to a 2018 BB lineup/expectations discussion that seems to be spinning off and looks good.

Oops not sure how I skipped ODUBBalls post:

STARTERS -
1 - Caver
2 - Pitt transfer
3 - BJ
4 - Freshman from GA
5 - Transfer from LSU

FIRST BACKUP AT EACH POSITION -
1 - Pitt transfer
2 - Caver, or Green, Freshman (Wade)
3 - Freshman (Wade)
4 - BJ, slender Freshman
5 - ????

That leaves Carver who you stated will play but "only sparingly", and no mention at all of Godwin anywhere in the mix.

Not knowing if this comes from the coaches or not, I am still skeptical of the team playing a lot more zone this season. I hope it is true, but will not believe it till I see it. I'm not sure that Jeff will devote enough time in practice working on the zone for it to become solid since he likes to work so much on his man-to-man. If it isn't working he will quickly return to playing man-to-man. Again, I hope he proves otherwise.

If Dickins isn't available then who is the backup center? If the LSU guy is in foul trouble, gets an illness, injury, etc. ... who is the starting and backup center (assuming Dickins isn't available)?

ODU has had some stellar freshmen forwards and centers over the years. Guys like Mark West, Kenny Gattison, Ronnie Valentine, and Alex Laughton immediately come to mind. Most however don't play to that level as freshmen. Hopefully at least one of these current freshmen will play up to, or at least very near, that level - especially if they end up having to start.

It seems to me that ODU has too many question marks to expect them to have the kind of season this year that many on here have been pointing towards them having for the last couple of seasons. There's always hope though.

And is that what we're calling Kithcart now? The Pitt Transfer? =]

RE: 2018 Mens BB Lineups and Exepcations
I'm confused. What we initially heard when Kithcart came here is that he wasn't a real good shooter. Has something changed that's playing the 2?

Someone else on here said Marquise was lighting it up. True? Not true?

Not doubting Blewbyu, whose recruiting is spot on, and I doubt it's his opinion only, but I also can't imagine they've already settled on the lineups in July when practice doesn't begin for another couple of months. What's the point of doing that as opposed to letting competition play out?

And since I have no idea how good Dickens is (would be) or what Robinson will contribute, I'm not inclined to say "agree" or "disagree." As someone else said, there are many questions. And I'd be of the same mindset if someone had said "Looks like we'll be in the NCAAs, agree or disagree?"

How does Robinson look? The fact that he is starting kind of goes without saying. Does he look like a beast, a contributor, or a starter-by-default?

That's what happens when you remove and copy only half of a post bit_9. Had you copied the entire post you would have included the post to which I was referring to along with my comments. It would then have been evident that I was using the terms that were in the post I was commenting about in my remarks for clarity. In blewbyu's post (the one I was commenting about) HE referred to Kithcart as "the Pitt transfer".

If I am the "you" that you are referring to, then you missed the boat. I wasn't creating my own proposal of the team's depth chart. I was referring solely to the information or opinion presented by blewbyu and using the terms (i.e. the Pitt transfer, bigger of the three freshman, etc.) that he used in describing the players and how he had them in a depth chart. At least that is how I read his post to present them as a depth chart. I did that for his comments and to see if he had anything else to add from the points I presented. He never mentioned Brill, Pilavios, or Godwin so I didn't either, other than to question why Godwin specifically wasn't in his discussion at all because I feel that he will see substantial playing time this season.

RE: 2018 Mens BB Best Guess @ Lineups and Expectations
While i don't have a guess on what the starting lineup will be or who will be first off the bench, i do think this year's team has the potential to have a lot of versatility. I could see a lineup where we go small with Caver, Kithcart, BJ, Green and Goodwin that would could be our best offensive lineup. It would definitely create some matchup problems for teams on the offensive end but we may have to play a 1-3-1 on defense in that scenario to offset our size disadvantage.

I agree and think that there are numerous question marks regarding the team at this point of their evolution, particularly among the inside positions. Additionally, guys like Carver, Godwin, and Green ... how much improvement have they shown? How much work have they put in during this off season?

That's true. If we need a jolt or if we're not as deep at the 4/5 (which we might well be if waiver doesn't go through) we might see that more often than we'd want. It could be an advantage or a weakness.
