Football practice begins today
The early start to the season gives us a bit earlier of a starting date than normal. Hopefully the team can stay healthy in the preseason workouts - we really don't have the depth to sustain too many injuries.

I think the roster was updated a bit the other day but I didn't see any additions or deletions - just a few minor updates to weights. One position change that surprised me is Jordan Myers to tight end. I just don't see him being big enough to be a blocking tight end at least. But that move must mean they're happy enough with their group of wide receivers.

(release on 1st day of practice)

What's with the knee brace thingy that a lot of players are wearing (including both Glaesmann and Tyner?). I'm thinking with the number of players wearing them that it's probably designed to help minimize stress on the knee - surely not everyone wearing them is coming off a knee injury??

Thanks for the post. Nice to see the team back.

We will have injuries. Some will likely be to key positions/players. We will have to overcome them and play just as well or better in spite of them like every good team does. We cannot keep using the same excuses if we expect things to be different than they have been the last few decades.

If Bloomgren is a good coach he will likely be gone. If he is a mediocre/bad coach he will likely be here quite a while. I root for him to be a good coach. We cannot fear the unknown. We must embrace it regardless of the circumstances.

This has been mentioned before, but I'm very excited that we have coverage of the team via The Roost.

Go check it out when you have a moment.

The Roost is one if the best news letters I have seen in a long time concerning Rice sports. The Chronicle should take note as an example how great college sports reporting is done. Thank you The Roost

It's not just the daily newsletter. If you comment on a tweet (with the posting of their daily article), they reply promptly with additional insight. Clearly, they're attending practices and regularly talking with the coaching staff.

Here is a link to the Fall Camp Depth Chart. Everything is fluid.

Thanks for the link - hadn't seen that yet.

I'm not sure if our opponents will allow us to start 13 guys on offense and 12 on defense. I'm guessing only 3 of those 5 WR/TE positions will count, and then I have no idea what Viper is on defense.

Still not exactly sure what happened to Gregor MacKellar.

Google searches lead me to believe that the Viper is a hybrid between a defensive end and outside linebacker.

Well, our depth chart has two 5-10 guys, one at 175lbs, another at 190, so I'm gonna venture a guess it's more of a backfield athlete?

Probably the nickel back in nickel situations, of which I'm guessing we will see many in CUSA. Actually the scheme seems to look a lot like Alabama's, where they go 3-4 and 4-3 out of a 3-3 shell. Except, at least for the time being, we don't have any of those 6-5, 260 linebackers who run 4.5 40s. When you have those, I'm not sure how much scheme matters.

I don't understand how Jack Fox is not on the Ray Guy watch list. Of the top punters from 2017, he is #6 of those returning for 2018.

Especially because there are two CUSA punters on the list (from ODU and Middle Tennessee State), and Fox was 2nd team all-CUSA punter last year, and is 1st team preseason punter this year.

The viper position is a hybrid LB/S...it features in Don Brown's Michigan defense, which is where Stewart picked it up, I'm assuming. Jabrill Peppers, a 2016 Heisman finalist from Michigan, was Michigan's viper for a part of his career.

Interesting we could have Miles Adams and Myles Adams combine on a sack.
