Rather startling how all but 3 are from the South.

RE: ESPN ranks the football national champs of the past 20 years
No way the 2001 Miami Hurricanes shouldn't be numero uno - they had like 50 NFL players, most of them well known, on that team.

Among the numerous stars on the 2001 Miami squad were: quarterback Ken Dorsey; running backs Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, Najeh Davenport, and Frank Gore; tight end Jeremy Shockey; wide receiver Andre Johnson; offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie; defensive linemen Jerome McDougle, William Joseph, and Vince Wilfork; linebackers Jonathan Vilma and D.J. Williams; and defensive backs Ed Reed, Mike Rumph, and Phillip Buchanon. Additional contributors included future stars Kellen Winslow II, Sean Taylor, Antrel Rolle, Vernon Carey, and Rocky McIntosh. In all, an extraordinary 17 players from the 2001 Miami football team were drafted in the first-round of the NFL Draft (5 in the 2002 NFL Draft: Buchanon, McKinnie, Reed, Rumph, and Shockey; 4 in 2003: Johnson, Joseph, McDougle, and McGahee; 6 in 2004: Carey, Taylor, Vilma, Wilfork, Williams, and Winslow; 1 in 2005: Rolle; and 1 in 2006: Kelly Jennings).

In addition they destroyed just about every team on their schedule sans Virginia Tech at Lane Stadium that year.

I know they held WVU to less then 1 yard per carry when they played them.

2001 Miami should be #1.

After that, I'd say the Florida and Alabama teams should come next, as they are the next-most talented. E.g., I think 2011 Alabama would shut Vince Young down.

2013 FSU is badly overrated. Played a creampuff schedule all year, and needed miracles to beat an average Auburn team in the title game. Paper tigers.

Finally, since the list is about celebrating "20 years of championship games", USC 2003 shouldn't be included, as they didn't play in a championship game.

I do think Miami 2001 was probably the best. They were certainly heads above everybody else that year. But then they didn't have a Vince Young.

2018 Alabama is rated too high. They had more flaws than just about any of Saban's teams.

Nobody stopped VY in college, but of course he was frequently stopped in the NFL. He just didn't face very many good defenses, including 2005 USC.

As for 2018 Alabama - they are one of Saban's teams, so I think 2018 is getting an X-factor plus their.

Remember, Saban is 6-1 in national title games, and the only one he lost was at the buzzer, so it's fair to think that even if the 2018 team was flawed in many ways, Saban would have found a way to win anyway.

Tennessee Titans' fans beg to differ... neighborhood casual restaurants had VY's number every week around town. I thought it was urban legend until so many people confirmed his eccentricities (see below).

I think people are beginning to forget how unstoppable Cam Newton was in 2010. Their justification for Texas as the #1 team was basically that Vince Young carried them. Cam was beyond superior to him in college. Also an underrated thing about 2010 Auburn was Nick Fairley. It's a rare thing to say that a team had the best offensive player and the best defensive player that season. Also 2009 Alabama is a joke to be ranked that high.

2001 Miami should probably be #1.

I agree with your particulars - Cam is the best college player of the past 10 years, and unlike Young, he proved he was really that good by doing it in the NFL as well. And Fairley was a beast, when Auburn played Oregon's point-a-minute offense in the title game, he was a big factor in shutting them down. He was the true MVP of the game.

And, Auburn did go 14-0 against a very tough schedule.

All that said, I wouldn't move them up more than 2 or 3 slots. Auburn did play a LOT of close games. The season could have gone off the rails at several points.

NO DOUBT! Ridiculous number of 1st round NFL picks on that team (and most of the 2 deep ended up in the league, too!)

2013 Florida State - I mean, wasn't the entire offense AND defense drafted by the NFL?

Southern Cal only won one national title though and it was vacated.

Oklahoma you could debate.

So maybe 3.5?

lol. USC was the AP 2003 national champion. Got the trophy and everything. Folks just need to stop recreating history there.

Southern Cal is about as much of a champion as Central Florida is. LSU was the national champion according to the rules agreed to by everyone.

It's actually somewhat of a joke that people cling to that when the BCS had been the standard for several years.

Fairley was a great individual talent, but that Auburn defense overall was probably the worst of those 20 champions. I wouldn't have been surprised if TCU would have beaten them if they had gotten in instead of Oregon.

They were voted on by AP voters. UCF wasn't. HUGE difference there.

probably will be the last split champion we ever have.
