Season "Stock" Contest
Football “Stock Market” Contest
The game – each person who elects to play will start with 100 points. The points will be used to buy shares in CUSA teams of their choice. The cost of the “stock” in each team is listed below. You will accumulate points based on the total number of wins by the team you hold stock in times the number of shares you own. So, if you put all your money in one team and their cost was 5 points per share, you will acquire 20 shares. If they win 6 games you end the season with 120 points, if they end with 4 wins you end with 80 points.
The object is to find teams you believe are over or under valued based on the initial price of the “stock”. If a team is assigned a value of 4, but you believe they will win 8 games, that would obviously be a stock to buy. You will also have the opportunity to “short” a team’s stock. However, you can only short one team AND NO MORE THAN 100 SHARES. Shorting is essentially selling a stock and then hoping to buy it back later for less money. In this case, if you short one share of a team that has a value of 5, you sell that stock and now have 105 to buy other stocks. Keep in mind though that each game won by a team you shorted deducts 1 point from your total, times the number of shares shorted.
You will not be able to buy or sell stock once the season starts, you live with your initial purchases. The win total will include the regular season, the championship game and any post season games. Keep in mind that the teams that make the conference championship will play 14 games, bowl teams will play 13, other teams 12 (additionally, Rice has an extra game this year).
Please post your entry in a standard format so my data input is a little easier. Below is an example.
SHORT – 5 shares FAU
BUY – 8 shares USM
Buy – 4 shares FIU
Buy – 10 shares UTEP
etc.
Basically put any short position first. Remember, when doing the math you have 100 points to spend PLUS the value of any shorted shares. You can only buy whole shares, no fractional shares. So if a stock is 7.5 and you only have 7 left, you have to buy something else.
Team Price/Shr
FAU 9.50
Marshall 8.50
UAB 8.00
UNT 7.50
ODU 7.50
La Tech 7.00
USM 6.50
Middle 6.00
UTSA 5.50
FIU 5.50
WKU 4.00
Rice 3.00
UTEP 2.50
Charlotte 2.50
Open for any questions.

RE: Season "Stock" Contest
Can prices change prior to the season starting? For instance, if a key player is lost for the season during August practice, could the market price fall to reflect a lower expectation? Example: MTSU QB Brent Stockstill is lost for the season, could MTSU's price drop from 7.00 to 6.00?

RE: Season "Stock" Contest
SHORT - 3 shares UAB
Buy - 10 shares WKU
Buy - 4 shares FIU
Buy - 5 shares MT
Buy - 4 shares USM
Buy - 1 share UTSA
Hopefully, that math is correct.

The wins would have to be set, there is no exchange or market maker setting wins based on “trades”

I'm in but I'll need to study some schedules and crunch some numbers before submitting. Closing bell before the first game is played or do you need it sooner?

Does FCS teams count? UNT has two FCS teams, Incarnate word and Liberty plus SMU at Home, talk about soft schedule has to be one the lowest in all of FBS.
Lowest SOS in CUSA at 124, followed by all Sunbelt teams

RE: Season "Stock" Contest
Banker, please help clarify the short shares. Because you say once the season starts, you can’t buy or sell a stock. Also, if you sold a short stock worth 5 points, you get 105?
Please help me by breaking down your scenario using the 5 shares of FAU you bought. When could you sell those, and what would you get back if you cashed out after, say 5 wins halfway through the season?
Are you then saying whatever value they’ve given you up to then, that’s it, and can’t then be used to buy more stock?

Curious where the values came from? I don't really see the logic for ODU being the 4th most expensive stock.
Excited to participate though! Just need some more research.

What is the deadline for submission and Why the h is the ODU stock so high after what we have seen last year? UNCC seems like a no brainer "Buy" for me with upside and a little to lose at 2.50. I am interested to know where the OP got the values from.

Great question. I was wondering the same. ODU's stock is more expensive than LA Tech's, USM's, MTSU's & UTSA's. That doesn't seem right. (But, FWIW, all the rest seem to be fairly priced.)

RE: Season "Stock" Contest
Does the price of every stock make sense to every investor?
I assigned the values based on my review of the schedules and then made some tweaks to make certain "stocks" more, or less attractive. If you were to predict every team perfectly then everyone who played would end up with the same score regardless of who you picked.
As to the "short" question. If you short two shares of FAU you have 119 dollars to buy other stocks (your original 100 plus 9.50 x 2). You don't buy the stock back, it just negatively impacts your score each time they win. If they win less than 9.5 it was a smart play. If they win 11 then the 19 you got for selling them initially will cost you 22 points at the end of the contest.
I'm not going to adjust price for any reported injuries. If you want to play that angle just wait to make your picks. As long as I have them before the first CUSA game (remember that Rice opens a week before everyone else) then you are good to go.

Aha! I think I get it now. The short stock you pick does not count against your 100. Essentially, your short stock pick could be whom you deem to be over valued by this chart.
And you can purchase a seemingly unlimited supply of this version of stock. It could help, or royally kill your chances. For example, per the values, let’s say someone believes ODU will finish under the predicted 7.5 mark, and achieve 6 wins.
If that person picked ten shares of the ODU short stock, they would receive a bonus of 15 points.
But if ODU won 9, the opposite effect would deduct you 15 points from your overall total.
Is that correct?
This is a brilliant game Banker. I’m in man. Got to pour through my strategy first.

Ok, so one more question. If someone under that scenario bought 10 shares of short stock in ODU, would they then have 175 pts to purchase stocks?
Then the penalty essentially comes the more they win?
