'Witch Hunt': CA Officials Reopen Investigation Against Baker Despite Her Court Win
Quote:Tastries Bakery owner Cathy Miller won her court case against a same-sex couple in February after they sued her for declining to cater their wedding. The State of California requested a preliminary injunction to either force Miller to design wedding cakes for same-sex couples or not create wedding cakes at all. In his ruling, Judge David Lampe noted that the anti-discrimination policy in the state was "the stuff of tyranny." If Lampe had sided with the California officials, Miller could have lost 40 percent of her revenue.

The Freedom of Conscience Defense Fund, the counsel representing Miller, reminded state officials about the First Amendment while the case was still ongoing.

“Cathy would never discriminate against anyone who walks through her bakery’s doors. She will gladly serve anyone, including same-sex couples,” FCDF’s chief counsel Charles LiMandri said. “But Cathy will not use her artistic talents to express messages that conflict with her sincerely held religious beliefs about marriage. We are pleased that the judge recognized that the First Amendment protects Cathy’s freedom of speech.”

Judge Lampe agreed.

"The State is not petitioning the court to order defendants to sell a cake," he said in his ruling. "The State asks this court to compel Miller to use her talents to design and create a cake she has not yet conceived with the knowledge that her work will be displayed in celebration of a marital union her religion forbids. For this court to force such compliance would do violence to the essentials of Free Speech guaranteed under the First Amendment."

Yet, now, the California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing is relaunching its administrative investigation of the bakery owner.

“This is a witch hunt," LiMandri said in a statement Thursday. "Once again, the California government is proving that it will stop at nothing to punish Cathy for her Christian faith.”

Should the DFEH continue to pursue Miller and her family, FCDF will move to enforce the existing judgment and seek attorneys’ fees under state law.

"Any further action the government takes against Cathy is merely to bully and persecute her,” LiMandri said.

Got to leave California. Let the blind lead the blind. One day. God will get his revenge.

I appreciate her trying to make a stand, but she will end up like someone who goes against the Clintons if she keeps fighting. Move to a state where you can have peace of mind and enjoy baking in.

Yeah. Sell your 2,000 sq ft house for $1M then move someplace like TN were you can get 4,000 sq ft for $450,000.

Or you could find a 2,000 sq ft house for $200,000-250,000.

And you can run your business as you darn well please.

2000 sq ft house in some areas in 'mainstream areas' of Silicon Valley are now about 1.6 million. Dont even ask about Palo Alto.... Hell, you would be lucky to get a 1700 sq foot condo for less than 1.2 these days....

Drag yourself into the 21st century. 03-wink

This is something that is mind boggling to me. Businesses, like those in Silicon Valley HAVE to pay big salaries for their techies, right? Why would you go to Big Taxes, Big Salaries, Big Everything that shouldn't need to be when you can go to places like El Pa...nevermind we have big taxes here too but we have small salaries so that compensates. I'm sure that those businesses can get more bang for their buck outside of California. So why do they insist on staying in a shiite hole when they can find better conditions in Texas, we have Liberals too. They're very abundant in places like Austin and Houston. For the weather El Paso can't be beat. It's dry and never has natural disasters.

Especially with all the virtual meeting capabilities these days. There's zero reason to locate your tech business in Silicon Valley IMHO.

Not to mention the beauty that is the sun bowl. I mean, its built into the rock. Unbelievable scenery. Too bad the Miners beat UCF most of the time there. And yes, I remember that 64 yard FG. Ugh!

Idaho is fastest growing state, also a lot of high tech companies moving to Utah.
