OK, honestly, does anyone thing these coaches really pay for this stuff out of their own pocket? Anderson buying donuts? Brown buying lunch? Even that ring thing. These are show pony coaches. They have agents. Their profile in the community is part of marketing these guys to the next big job. I suspect the agents have much more to do with this than anyone wants to admit. And I'm not singling out Brown and Anderson. They all do it. College football is about money. No need to delude ourselves.

I can believe Blake Anderson would do that. If I made the kind of money G5 head coaches made I could buy a few dozen boxes of doughnuts for each major construction project that goes on for football.

And in the FBS coaching world who gets overlooked because no one has ever heard of them? You don't need marketing.

This reminds me of my favorite episode of Coach.
Luther, the asst head coach of Minnesota State, was offered a HC job at a nearby college. He was so excited about finally becoming a real HC, he took the whole team out for lunch.

When you are making roughly $15,000 a week you can afford doughnuts or a championship ring, though none of the stuff about Brown says HE paid for the ring, just that he sent it with a handwritten note.

Its not about buying donuts. Its about caring and saying thanks for a job well done.

Maybe their intentions are completely altruistic. But with the complete commercialization of college football I tend to take all these "feel good" storied with one large grain of sand. I guess being in the newspaper business for 40 years has made me a total cynic.
