Before the interwebs and DNA kits came along, they were quite simply the best in the world at this — the most comprehensive and accurate database in existence. No one else was even close.

But a lot has changed in the world of genealogy over the past ~25 years. A lot of information which you had to travel to SLC for in 1990, can be obtained online in 5 minutes if you know where to look.

I've been curious to find out about mine but I have found out that on Cortez' ship to the new world there was a man with my last name and my name is very rare. Recall my uncle getting so into genealogy that he learned to speak Spanish (he already spoke French like the rest of his brothers) just so he could travel to Spain to do genealogy work on our family's history. He gave me a copy of the charts he generated, traced family back to the 1600's. I'll dig those out some day soon and do a refresher.

Every ancestor that have been able too look up is either English, scottish, French or German and all firsr came here over 200 years ago. Very boring. Nothing fun. I hoped I had at least had a crazy Spaniard or a drunk portugesian but no luck.

Ancestry.com, which the LDS own is also of value. After seeing the results of the news crew, I would not waste the money on the DNA kits, in a few years they could be very good.

My dad went through the Mormon church back in the 80s to connect some dots when he was working on our genealogy. I've heard he same thing. I think they have people stand in as a proxy and be baptized for deceased people so they can be saved retroactively. If we have any Mormon posters they might can clarify but that is what I have heard as well.

That is a strange religion. How can you be saved through Christ if you never accepted Him or asked forgiveness?

That goes against the most basic teachings of the NT.

It kinda like when this current Jesuit pope claims you don't need Christ for salvation. WUT? How can you even claim to be a Christian?

RE: OT: 23 and me
We have a big Mormon population in our community and our summer swim team is like half-Mormon, half-not. For an odd religion, they sure have the nicest, All-American looking families (just they are twice as large as an average family). Growing up in Southern California, there was also a big Mormon population out there. They sort of had that cult reputation back then too but it was a bit like a sub-plot from the 1970's TV show Soap where one of the boys joined a cult because they had the best looking girls in it.

I had a niece do the 23-and-me thingy and it pretty much confirmed what we already knew - my ancestors are all eastern European (Lithuanian and Polish).

Forgot about the best part!!!1

My closest relative who I share 7% of my DNA with is from Kansas. Her maiden name was Ward. She is suspected as my 1 st cousin. One of my grandparents on my mothers side had a a brother or sister out of wedlock!!!!! I reached out to her no reply back yet. She was raised in Kansas and now resides in Wichita. She has a half brother who is currently serving as a General in the US Army who I am also related to. It’s crazy.

I had a friend whose parents and lone sibling were deceased who discovered through this that she had been adopted. She was able to verify it by talking to an aunt. She had no idea.

I’ve been wanting to talk about this for awhile. For Father’s Day my daughter got me a 23 and me DNA kit. The biggest one the whole 9 yards. I got the results back last Saturday. I always thought my grandma was American Indian. My Mom told me she was part of the Crow tribe. When I was in school I even did a school project on the Crow Nation and their roots in Ohio. I’m 100% European and mostly French German and 20% Irish. I’m even 2% Ashenkazi Jew.

My Dad died at the ripe old age of 52. I’ve always had this number in the back of my head. Well it turns out my DNA is incredibly healthy. I even have a GG variant in muscle composition that every Olympic athlete ever tested has. Im also, supposed to be 3% skinner than the average American. For my height my DNA says I should weigh about 178. I weigh 240 currently. I always thought I was predisposed to being stocky. Here all along I’m supposed to be an Olympic athlete ripped at about 178. This plays mind games with you. When wife read the results she looked at me and says. I quote..... “you’ve underachieved”........

Total mind screw.......

I’ve been reflecting upon this a lot lately. 1. I think about Elizabeth Warren. If your parents tell you you are Indian what are you supposed to do? I’m telling you my maternal grandma looked like an Indian. High cheekbones and big nose. I never doubted it. Then the bit about my muscle composition. Makes the mind wander........ anybody else try this?

I've always wanted to do this for the percentage of what comes from where, but the privacy issues keep me from doing it. Your DNA ends up in the government's hands and I'm sure the insurance companies will soon follow if that hasn't already happened yet.

Yep, which is why I haven't partaking in any of this DNA testing stuff. No telling when that info will get hacked and what hands it will fall into. Also, the current company says it will not sell the info, but nothing is said about whatever company eventually buys that company.

The National Genographic goes into your deep ancestry-thousands of years ago. Not so much into recent, really just to about 500-1000 years ago. One interesting thing is that it also calculates Neanderthal and Denosivan ancestry. Average Neanderthal is 2.1%.

I have Neanderthal, but no Denosivan. My son has both.

RE: OT: 23 and me
Bullet that was the other neat thing I found out. There are 3000 markers of Neanderthal DNA that 23 and me test for. I had an unusually high set of those markers in my DNA. They have a site that will highlight the Neanderthal DNA on a page. I was in the 67th percentile of the people that they tested for Neanderthal genes. The majority of my DNA traces back to the French German border so it makes some sense.

Haven't seen it, but have read part of the script and several plot summaries. Basically it comes across as an attempt to mock Mormonism. I don't subscribe to LDS beliefs but I respect them. From the timing, I think it was largely an attempt to mock Mormonism at a time when a Mormon (Mitt Romney) was looking like the upcoming presidential opponent of Messiah Obama. With that in mind, I doubt i would find it funny or entertaining. And I have no interest in spending my money to support it.

It definitely mocks some cultish elements of Mormonism. The back story behind JosephbSmith finding tablets of gold that “nobody else saw”. Them changing their beliefs about blacks in 1978.

I could see how it could make somebody who is a fundamentalist a little uncomfortable.
