DNR JMU Basketball Beat Writer
Josh Walfish announced that he is leaving the DNR today and the JMU beat. I enjoyed his coverage of the teams and hope they get someone in his spot soon to keep us up to date on the JMU hoops programs.

I'm sure some snide comments will follow related to the DNR and JMU hoops but just wanted to get this out there and no one else had seen his announcement today.

Good.

I’m just happy to finally read that JMU basketball can beat someone...

As a retired RN, when I see "DNR" I think "Do Not Resuscitate" which would be a good end for the H'burg paper. It is awful. If I want JMU sports news I go to the Breeze. If I want real H'burg news I sit down with WHSV and a box of salt, then ask around instead.

Actually the current beat sports reporters for the DNR -- Greg Madia and Walfish (outgoing) have been doing an excellent job covering JMU sports. Much better than the previous folks since Mike Barber. They post their articles to Rivals.

The Breeze is absolute awful coverage of sports.

Agree on the Breeze comment. It's usually old news and not very thorough.

At least you had a beat writer (and hopefully get a replacement). I don't think Hofstra does.

Sorry missed the other thread. Ironically Walfish will now be the beat writer for a local Massachusetts paper covering UMass sports...

There's a guy on twitter Jerry Beach who is a local NY journalist and informally or formally covers Hofstra hoops. I just stopped following him because I got tired of his baseball posts where he claimed that Terry Collins was a better manager than Joe Girardi.

The other reason I don't read the DNR is that I refuse to subscribe to read it. It's just a sad excuse for a newspaper and I'm not paying for it. I come from places with much better newspapers, TYVM.

I'm not going to say it's a great paper, but it serves an area of less than 100K people. It's about as good as the Roanoke Times which has a market three times the size. If you're trying to compare it to to a much larger market paper, i.e. Richmond, that's just not fair.

Yup....The RTD and the Norfolk Paper are the only 2 papers in the state of VA that I would call 'good' papers. As for the other papers Roanoke Times, DNR, Daily Progress, etc.....the local sports coverage is by far the best thing about them.

New beat writer for hoops starts Wednesday.

Shane Mettlen
@ShaneMettlen

http://shanemettlen.blogspot.com/p/about-me.html

Judging from his resume looks to be a little more experienced than the last few beat writers.

I think the DNR generally does an excellent job covering JMU football and basketball.

I read it online every day and happily pay for it. Madia is excellent. He does a great podcast and replies to twitter questions on it. In camp, he provided two articles a day which included his field notes.
