I like the idea. I do! I think I've put forward a similar idea here and on the CUSA board, but it was more about taking the top four or five and having them play a round-robin at a neutral site to replace the flawed and unpopular conference tournament. Any little thing to help is something worth trying.

But here's the thing: If you believe that there's a concerted effort by the NCAA and the Power 6 conferences to shut out the mid-major conferences from at-large bids and better seeds, then nothing that Adams or the commissioners do will matter because the manipulators will manipulate again to get where they want to be. If RPIs get inflated, they look at other metrics. If other metrics are inflated, they create new ones. Or change emphasis. Or lean on the eyeball test.

I don't know how I feel about that yet, but I do think that if we're all playing a loaded game, then no matter what we do to fix the rules, the fixers will fire back to return to their equilibrium, and they have a lot more weapons at their disposal. So let's hope this is a relatively fair game, because that's the only way this plan has any chance of working.

The selection process is completely subjective. They will do what they want. I for one do not believe there is a concerted effort to screw the mid majors. I think the committee honestly takes who they think are the best teams and really don't use the computer metrics or blind resumes much anymore. This has inherent bias as mid majors don't get on TV much, don't get discussed among the talking heads, and typically don't have a Trae Young on their team that the committee thinks can get hot and win high level games on his own... but I really don't think there is a concerted effort. Instead, I think most of the high level mid majors from 10 years ago that were getting the at large bids are now in the A10, AAC, and Big East. Butler, Creighton, Wichita State, Memphis, and Davidson are no longer mid majors.

They may not be "bias" in terms of mid major vs. others, but them seem to have in their head that P5 schools are better than mid majors and that allows bias to creep in.

In terms of Trae Young, they didn't put Oklahoma in thinking he would get hot and win games, they put him in because he was good for tv.

We are in agreement on this.

Excellent article. The current NCAAT construct is definitely a cartel and I've always thought that the SEC would eventually take a hard look at it especially when you consider the massive $$ involved.

If you go back 10-12 years and look at the at-large bids. The number of P-6 schools getting those has increased. Not every single year, but the trend has been towards power conferences. If that is not a bias what is?

And the vast majority of all those extra power schools results in mo' NCAAT money going to power conferences. It is a bias and it is $$$$$$ related.

And further still, most of those last 4 in from power schools tend to flame out as one and done. Not all I know. How many times does some conference get a large number in and like only 1 or 2 make it out of the sub regional? Happens quite a bit. It is all about the Benjamin's. More bids to power conferences more money they get and the rest of the conferences get less. All things being the same, if it comes down to the 9th team from the ACC or a 2nd CUSA team who do you think will get the bid? If you say CUSA you have not been watching the NCAAT at all.

Which is WHY this article was written. Which is why CUSA is doing something to increase the top teams' chances of getting that bid. Trying to raise that profile so maybe once in a while that CUSA team gets in.

Again, if you go back 10-12 years, the vast majority of the mid-majors getting bids are no longer mid-majors. With the pool of power conference schools growing by poaching the top mid-major schools, it is much more difficult to build a resume. The power schools are probably colluding to keep mids off their schedules, but I don't think the selection committee is actively trying to shut them out. There is bias, we agree. I just don't think they sit around and strategize how to keep the mid-majors out, but there is certainly bias in the subjective selections.

I don't think having mids in the tournament is hurtful to NCAA $$$. I recall a few years back FGCU vs Georgetown had triple the ratings of Michigan State and I want to say Duke.

I agree with your take on this. I don't think anyone is plotting against mid majors. I think it has much more to do with exposure and perception. As the number of mid major games and highlights on ESPN has shrunk to nil, so has the number of at large bids.

The NCAA gets its money based on a contract they have with various TV networks. If the ratings go up the networks can get more money from their advertisers thru their advertising sales. The contracted value paid to the NCAA does not change. Regardless of the ratings.

And More teams a conference gets in the more NCAA money the conference gets.

No doubt the conferences are acting in their best interest (as they should). The question is whether the NCAA is actively colluding with the power conferences to shut out the mid-majors. I don't believe they are nor do I believe it is in their best interests. The contracts with the networks are negotiated based on forecasted ratings. So while in the current contract, the NCAA gets paid $X whether the tournament gets an average rating of 1 or 50, the next contract will be impacted.
