I think they mean diving after loose balls on the floor.

And there certainly is more speed, thank heaven.

Rebounding was much better in North Carolina but this weekend, blah.

I know that’s what they mean but diving for a loose ball is quickness and effort. Not easy to get better at that. You either have it or you don’t. Also a lot of them won’t be loose if they hold onto them.

I think what they're asking for is greater effort. Some teams pride themselves on floor burns. I can remember Lindsay screaming at players for not diving every chance they get.

Holding on to the ball helps, too.

The women host Youngstown State at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the first game of a double header with the men. One ticket gets you in both games.

The Flashes beat the Northern Kentucky and Oakland of the Horizon League over the weekend, but YSU should be a much bigger test. The Penguins are 4-0, with wins over Pittsburgh, Loyola of Chicago and Robert Morris -- all solid Division I teams. YSU was picked fourth in the Horizon and got the only first place vote besides perennial champion Green Bay.

Kent State is 2-2. Megan Carter leads the Flashes with 17.8 points per game, which is ninth in the MAC. Flashes may well be without their starting point guard, freshman Asiah Dingle, who hurt her ankle in the fourth quarter of the Oakland game.

RE: Women’s Basketball 2018-19
The women beat Youngstown State 62-34 in perhaps the team’s best game in a decade.

YSU had been undefeated in four games, winning at Pittsburgh in its opener. The Penguins had averaged 72 points a game.

Kent State held them to 17 percent shooting, and that counts three three-pointers YSU made in the last three minutes. YSU certainly isn’t that bad, but Flashes seemed to contest every shot. Merissa Barber-Smith blocked five shots; Lindsey Thall two.

Youngstown went 0 for 17 in third quarter, scoring only two points on two free throws.

Megan Carter had 20 points. Freshman Mariah Modkins, starting her first game in place of injured point guard Asiah Dingle, had 14. Barber-Smith had 11 rebounds in 16 minutes. Thall had nine.

RE: Women’s Basketball 2018-19
Flashes host Duquesne at 7 Wednesday in what looks like an interesting game.

Duquesne has all five starters back from as team that went 25-8 a year ago and is the preseason favorite in the Atlantic 10. But Dukes are 2-3. beating only two lower mid-majors. They've lost to TCU, Texas and Toledo.

Kent State has won three in a row after losing at North Carolina and N.C. State. Flashes' 62-34 victory over previously unbeaten Youngstown State before Thanksgiving was most impressive.

Freshman point guard Asiah Dingle, who missed the YSU game with an ankle injury, is expected back. She's averaging 12.8 points a game.

The Flashes played well against a good-looking Duquesne team but lost 77-72.

Kent led through three quarters, but Duquesne all-conference guard Chassidy Omogrosso scored 20 points in the second half. The Dukes outscored KSU 24-17 in the fourth quarter.

The Flashes trailed 16-7, then turned on their defense and dominated for the rest of the first half. Duquesne made halftime adjustments and scored 24 in both the third and fourth quarters. KSU made only four of 14 shots in the fourth quarter.

Coach Todd Starkey called the game a preview of the MAC season. Duquesne, which was 25-8 last season, is the preseason favorite in the Atlantic 10.

KSU had four players in double figures, led by Megan Carter with 17 points. Freshman Lindsay Thall had a career-high 15. Freshman Asiah Dingle, back in the lineup after missing a game with an ankle injury, had 13 and six assists. Ali Poole had 10.

The loss broke a three-game winning streak for Kent, which is 3-3. Duquesne is also 3-3, with early-season losses to TCU and No. 11 Texas.

Way too much one and one by Carter and to a lesser extent Dingle at the end of the game. They forgot the rest of the team. Hopefully a good lesson for the freshmen.

Noticed the student section was open for the women’s game. Don’t know if that means the pre game buffet is headed back upstairs but it might be a good sign. Almost no one sits there during women’s games so it seemed odd they would have it open.

The women head to Wright State Sunday for their second game in a row against a tough opponent.

The Raiders are ranked 21st in the latest mid-major poll and have averaged more than 24 wins over the last five years. This year they’re 4-3 with losses to 5-1 Michigan State and 4-2 Belmont, another top mid-major.

Kent State is 3-3 and coming off a 79-72 loss to Duquesne, preseason favorite in the Atlantic 10. KSU led at the half and after three quarters of that game.

RE: Women’s Basketball 2018-19
The Flashes made just two-of-24 three-point shots but still managed to fight Wright State to the end on the road before losing 61-55.

KSU struggled mightily with Wright State's zone defense, in making their fewest number of three-pointers this season and shooting their lowest percentage overalll (27).

But Wright State, which is 5-3 and ranked 21st in this week's mid-major poll, didn't shoot much better at 29 percent. The Raiders went on a 13-2 in in the last four minutes of the first half to take a 33-23 halftime lead.

Kent State got within two points several times in the second half but could never tie the game.

Megan Carter had 18 points for KSU. Asiah Dingle, Ali Poole and Lindsey Thall all had nine. Merissa Barber-Smith had 10 rebounds and Alexa Golden nine.

Sure glad that wasn’t a home game. I know there are a lot of freshman but that game was scary. Hopefully just an anomaly.

RE: Women’s Basketball 2018-19
The women have a good chance to win their first road game of the season Friday at Robert Morris, which is 1-6.

The Colonials are favored to win the Northeastern Conference and have played some solid teams, including Youngstown State, Rhode Island, Loyola-Marymount and Iowa. The only game they've lost by more than 10 points is Iowa, which is ranked 14th in the country.

Flashes are 3-4 and coming off a 61-55 loss at Wright State in which both teams shot below 30 percent and 8 percent (!!) from three-points distance. Wright State is 18th in this week's Mid-Major rankings. Earlier KSU lost at North Carolina and North Carolina State, which is ranked 10th overall by AP.

RE: Women’s Basketball 2018-19
Kent State overcame three-of-23 shooting in the first half to beat Robert Morris 54-46 Friday for its first road win of the season.

The win evens Kent's record at 4-4 and breaks a two-game losing streak. Robert Morris, the preseason favorite in the Northeastern Conference, is 1-7. Six of its losses have come by 10 points or fewer.

Despite the dreadful first half shooting, KSU trailed only 22-20.

In the second half, Alexa Golden scored all of her team-high 11 points as the Flashes went on a 15-4 run in the first five minutes of the third quarter.

Golden was the only KSU player in double figures. Lindsey Thall had nine points and Mariah Modkins eight. Merissa Barber-Smith had 10 rebounds and a season-high six points.

Full story with quotes from Golden, Barber-Smith and coach Todd Starkey is on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

RE: Women’s Basketball 2018-19
I've finally posted a good interview on the women's 2019 recruiting class on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

Coach Todd Starkey calls the three incoming freshmen "can't miss" players.

Newark (Ohio) guard Katie Shumate "will be our most versatile defender from day one," he said. Olmsted Falls guard Clare Kelly is "as good a three-point shooter as there is in the state of Ohio this year." Louisville, Kentucky, forward Nila Blackford is "strong and athletic and "can really run, catch and finish."

All three could compete to start on KSU's current 4-4 team, Starkey said.

RE: Women’s Basketball 2018-19
The women return to action Monday when they travel to Saint Bonaventure, which is 3-7 on the season.

The Flashes have a chance to finish 7-4 in their non-conference schedule with a win at Bonaventure, at 2-8 NJIT on Friday and at home against Division II Clarion (7-3) on New Year's Eve.

Saint Bonaventure has an RPI of 225 (of 351 teams) and has beaten only teams whose RPI was worse than 300. The Bonnies losses have all been by at least eight points, the closest being to Akron (5-2 and a 223 RPI) and Hofstra (4-6 and 263).

Kent State's RPI is 166, ninth in the MAC.

RE: Women’s Basketball 2018-19
The women scored their most points of the season, made their highest percentage of shots and played one of their best all-around games in beating Saint Bonaventure Monday, 76-64.

The victory was the Flashes' second road win of the season and moved their record to 5-4. Saint Bonaventure is 3-8.

Freshman point guard Asiah Dingle led four Flashes in double figures with a career-high 17 points. Fellow freshman Lindsey Thall had 14, junior Ali Poole had 13 and senior Alexa Golden 10.

The Flashes made 51.9 percent of their shots, highest this season by almost 8 percentage points. Their 76 points were one higher than in their 75-65 victory over Oakland last month.

Full story, with quotes from Dingle, coach Todd Starkey and assistant Morgan Toles, is on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

The women's team plays a 2 p.m. Friday game at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

NJIT is 3-8, and though they've won two games in a row, their RPI is still 333 (out of 351 teams). Kent State is 5-4 with an RPI of 140, which is seventh highest in the MAC.

Kent State's offense struggled, but the Flashes had 23 offensive rebounds and forced 33 NJIT turnovers to win their third road game in a row Friday, 57-40.

Megan Carter scored 19 points, breaking a two-game slump. Asiah Dingle overcame first-half foul trouble to score 15. All Poole had eight points and eight rebounds. Merissa Barber-Smith had nine rebounds in 16 minutes, and Lindsay Thall scored seven points and blocked three shots.

KSU made just 29 percent of its shots and led by only one at halftime. But the Flashes outscored NJIT 37-21 in the second half.
