If Texas is already netting in that ballpark now, what's the incentive of leaving and giving up its own network?

Good question. Just as when we discussed Big 12 expansion 2 years ago, Texas is unique and unpredictable. UT will do what they want to do, and not care about what its conferences peers think. I lived in Austin for 4 years starting in '97, UT fans are a different breed.

UT athletics have higher revenue than any other athletic dep't. http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/finances/

1 Texas Big 12 $214,830,647

So $215M, and those #'s are a year old. So the $35M from the Big 12 is a small fraction, around 16%, of their total revenues.

Texas is tired of sharing equally conference TV revenues with programs like Iowa State and Kansas State and Baylor and Tech and West Virginia whose TV revenues would be around Memphis' level if Texas and Oklahoma weren't in the Big 12. I think they act on that when the Big 12 TV contract expires after the '24-'25 season.

Agree but you know nothing is set in stone as well as I. If Texas decided today to move to B10 starting with 19-20 season, the TV contract would be renegotiated accordingly. And I have the maxium Directv package and the Longhorn network is not on my package as far as I can tell. I think it will go away when that contact expires.

After all, they are not a national brand like Notre Dame.

I dunno if they would.
Texas is the big dog of the Big 12. They run the place...and that is why Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, and Texas A&M all left...as they were tired of playing second fiddle to them.
Would Texas want to go the SEC or Big 10, where they'd not only NOT be the boss...but have to give up their extra revenue from the Longhorn Network?

Texas will not lower themselves and join the SEC. Not in our lifetimes.

Would there be an opportunity to replace those 2 and carry on with 10 teams, would they look to add 4 or more teams, or would it be a free-for-all with the remaining 8 B12 teams splitting up into various leagues.

Either way, I'm just glad to be where we're at for now. This is a great conference, and seems to be continually gaining momentum and national recognition. Now we just need that next tv contract to make a big leap in the $ payout.

Go Tigers!

I would love to see that contract too but with ESPN cutting costs to an extreme, don’t expect them to quadruple our contract. Have to hope Fox gets more aggressive. With the coming elimination of anything but internet tv (closer than most think), it’s likely they will not jump in with big $ either. Major networks just have one sports channel which hurts because they have up to this point only bid on 3-4th choice rights.

I don’t know what it will be but I suspect the AAC will spin a doubling of our contract as a major deal.

Our big revenue source is getting back up to 14-15K season tickets in basketball which earns $15-20M. Everyone ridiculed that number before but if you look at the donation required per seat and count those seats in lower level and club, that number is very realistic. We don’t know how many freebies some of the major corporate sponsors get which I think was obverlooked in past discussions and could lower that number a couple of million easily.

So not only is internet tv becoming the preferred option by many, now they are eliminating all other tv? Seems like you missed a step or two.

And you say you're not Penny Lane...but that is exactly the poster that I recall "everyone ridiculing" with those numbers.

The contacts will be based on ala carte revenue on the next round of negotiations. The networks learned that college football, while good, is fairly regional unlike NFL as ratings show. I would be surprised if contracts came in at any more than 60% of what they are now with ala carte incentives based exclusively on viewers.

Didn't the B10 court Oklahoma and Mizzou from the B12 once upon a time?

I wonder why the B10 doesn't have an ESPN sugar-daddy like the SEC.
