Amid less CUSA revenue, UAB forced to make tough cuts
Quote:The ever-widening gulf between the haves and have-nots of modern day college athletics hit UAB like a punch in the gut last month.

The athletic department was forced to cut or eliminate 12 positions before the start of its new fiscal year in July. The estimated savings are about $400,000. Caught in the middle of the sudden layoffs was Zac Schrieber.

Schrieber was a sports information director at Samford University for 14 years. Last month, he was offered a position by UAB to be the Blazers' new SID for men's basketball. For a father with two young children, it was a major step for his family and his career.

Then came the call from UAB's human resources.

Just before the end of business on Friday, June 15, and two days before the start of his new job at UAB, the university's human resources department informed him the position was no longer available.

Schrieber said the call came at 4:29 p.m. Samford's human resources department closed at 4:30 p.m.

"If I would have been told just four hours earlier, I could have most likely stopped everything on the Samford end of things and kept my job there," Schrieber said in a text message.

Schrieber is now unemployed for the first time in 23 years.

Athletic cutbacks and layoffs. Hope they don't have to do something drastic like shut down the football program.

Sadly, this is only going to become more common for members of the G5. Budget issues will eventually force the G5 members to regionalize to save on travel and hopefully raise attendance/ticket rev with more regional rivals that will also be close enough for visiting fans to attend.

Sorry, but I would file suit if I were that dude. That's just bad to hire for a position and then eliminate it before the person starts. That's bad faith.

It's crap what UAB did to him...but his job at his old school was gone. He was going to start in two days the new position. 4 hours makes no difference. And lets be honest, once he told his old employers he was jumping ship he probably wasn't welcomed at the old place. Hopefully he finds a good job quickly. But every change in life creates risk.

It's been discussed in another thread but not much difference with UAB promoting their long time and successful softball coach Marla Townsend to an administrative position only to eliminate that position (and her employment) after 1 year in the new role as part of the financial cutbacks........yet the AD gets a raise when it's all said and done.

That isn't really the point. It is a very poor job by UAB AD management to not manage the financial situation better and not hire when a reduction-in-force is needed.

RE: Amid less CUSA revenue, UAB forced to make tough cuts
I don't get it. UAB AD blames the cuts on loss of TV revenue. Their revenue #s dropped like $5M according to most recent budget report. He acts like someone just told him last month that CUSA no longer gets $1.1M.

Was UAB getting equal share of TV revenue when they didn't field a football team?

It seems risky for Birmingham to build a stadium with the financial issues happening at UAB. I feel for the UAB fans and those who were good performers and lost their job.

USM has equally bad budgeting problems, but I hope that we don't dump on a guy as bad as UAB did on the dad with two young kids. That was just not cool. In fact it was just downright cowardly the way it went down. Shame on UAB.

I was the point for the comment I was commenting on.

I bet USM don't have to deal with the same problems that UAB is dealing with. Administrative people with interests aligned with best interests of some other organization are always a bad idea. Either UAB has to figure out a way to get UAB's future out of the hands of those slimy folks in the Bama system or break away entirely and form their own BOT that doesn't give a rats ass about what happens in Fucksloosa. I feel for UAB and that dude that lost the job and is unemployed. We all have a variety of problems like budget, bad AD, attendance, recruiting soon and so forth but this is just a ****** up situation that UAB have to some how manage to get out of. I mean how many schools have their FB program shutdown by a slime ball and have to go put up a fight to bring it back.

UAB will never break from UA, the medical school is worth much more money then football ever will be. Ultimately, the board shut the program down a year to late, if they wanted it to stick. When CBC got there and started winning, finally, the fans were coming back. That’s the only reason the city even took notice. Had they shut it down during the previous year, no one would have cared.

Now with that said, there needs to be more representation in support of UAB on the BOT. Just not sure when/if that will ever happen. The big thing is getting the Bryant hanger on’s off the board. And that is happening.

RE: Amid less CUSA revenue, UAB forced to make tough cuts
The UAB family is embarrassed by the actions of our AD and pretty much all of us but one are pissed off about it. First Football isn't in any danger and that goober is being funny with the numbers.

Slowly the Bryant leeches will die off and be replaced. Another hope in getting some sort of help is UAB alum (Played on the very first UAB football team) is running for Governor. Its an uphill battle and if he doesn't win this time he will run again.

hey we would settle for equal representation with folks loyal to UAB at this point. The only UAB alum left on the board is married to Bobby Humphrey and he works at Bryant bank. She didn't give a rat's ass about football being cut.

Good news is we have Birmingham, The Football Foundation, and the Group of 7 wealthiest and most influential business leaders in our court now.

The war is far from over but we have never been stronger financially and support wise among the movers and shakers.

Is it true that your AD just got a nice raise?

Yes. He knew about the reduced revenue in 16. Accepted a pay raise, found out afterwords that tV revenue was going up 400k in March. Just made the cuts. Most had Bartow ties. The new CFO he appointed was the manager for the Bama basketball team. You can’t make this crap up.

9 D-1 programs, 5 FBS 4 FCS
4 DII
2 DIII
2 NAIA

That’s a lot of football programs in Alabama, and before South started playing, the closest one to Mobile was 3 hours away.
