KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan men's basketball head coach Steve Hawkins announced the signing of guard Adrian Martin to a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday.
Martin joins forward Kawanise "Squeaky" Wilkins and guard William Boyer-Richard as part of the 2018 recruiting class. The Broncos have one scholarship spot remaining.
Adrian Martin • 6-3 • Guard • Sugar Hill, Ga. • Lanier High School
From Sugar Hill, Ga., Adrian Martin played for head coach Branden Mayweather at Lanier High School. During his senior season, Martin averaged 18.7 points per game and helped his team advance to the Sweet Sixteen in the GHSA state tournament. The 6'3" guard averaged 17.3 points per game as a junior.
During his senior campaign, Martin was named Co-Region 8 6A Player of the Year and was selected as one of the Super Six Basketball Players in Gwinnett County for the Class of 2018. Martin also earned First Team All-Region and All-County honors and was named Second Team All-State.
Martin finished his career with over 1,700 points and is Lanier High School's all-time leading scorer. The 6'3" guard also hold the school record for most three-pointers in a career with 284.
Hawkins on Martin: "We are really excited to welcome Adrian into our family. He fills a huge need for us because he has the ability to play both guard positions. At 6'3", he is long and can really shoot the ball and is a superior athlete. The best thing about Adrian is that his potential is off the charts."
"Equally as exciting is that this is the third signee that fits our culture and vision of what a student-athlete should be. He is a terrific kid that comes from a great family background. Adrian has played basketball at a really high level in the state of Georgia the past four years, playing against high level talent such as Colin Sexton who was a five-star recruit who went to Alabama."
Adrian Martin on WMU: "After talking with Coach Hawkins and Coach Clayton Bates, I just felt a real family environment both on and off the court. I like to get up and down the court and defend which is what WMU's playing style is and I am excited to start playing Bronco basketball."
Lanier HS head coach Branden Mayweather: "Adrian is a tremendous person and teammate and a true class act. Not only is Western Michigan getting a great basketball player but they are getting a great young man that will do well both on and off the court."
"Adrian has meant the world to me. You don't get to coach kids like this on a regular basis. For him to be my first Division I signee and Lanier High School's first D1 signee, he is somebody I will never forget as a person and a player."
