RE: Good read on expanded college football playoff
Good find, thanks.
There is already an existing model to emulate through the FCS playoffs in which 24 schools receive bids.
A similar FBS playoff incorporating existing bowls is possible, but fierce resistance exists.

the possibility of an NCAA Football playoff is ZERO if is is not controlled my the SEC/Big10.
The Bowl system, the BCS, and the College Football Playoff is NOT ABOUT MONEY (directly). They were and are about power and the difference in money and access between the haves and haves not.
In other words, these P5 college Presidents knew that each conference/team was leaving millions on the table with Bowls - BCS- and even the CFP but they would rather get 90% of the $100,000,000 and keep everyone out and under funded than get 50% of a Billion and allow the G5 to be on theoretical even footing with them (see the NCAA basketball tourney.

Any notion of an expanded playoff making the regular season less relevant is ludicrous. It would make the regular season more relevant for more teams and more fans. Create more excitement. It would be amazing.

RE: Good read on expanded college football playoff
This guy wants to eliminate the Liberty Bowl from hosting a playoff game. I have a better idea for a 40 team playoff that includes the Liberty Bowl, bear me out. All playoff games will be played in 31 of existing bowl games with an additional 8 home games.
Every conference champion with at least 12 teams (that is every conference except the big twelve) gets an automatic bid. every conference with 16 teams gets a home game in first round. Conferences with 16 teams are ranked first then the best of the at least 12 team conferences are ranked to complete the 8 home games. The champion/s who do not receive a home game will receive a 1st round bye.
The runner-up of every conference with 16 teams will then be ranked. then the runners-up of the at least twelve team confrences will be ranked. Of these teams (champion/s without a home game, runners-up of 16 team conferences, then the runners-up of the at least twelve team conferences) the top 8 ranked receive a bye in the first week.
Those runner-up teams who do not receive a first round bye will be ranked first then another team from each of the 16 team conferences will be chosen and ranked if that does not make up 8 teams then from the at least twelve 12 conferences will be ranked and then chosen to complete the top 24.
All teams from that group who do not make the top 24 and some additional teams will make-up the final 16 teams in the tournament. So the Big Twelve conference and independents (Notre Dame and BYU among others will have an opportunity to be ranked in the bottom sixteen teams of the playoff). of course they will be competing for rankling in the top 40 with all other above mentioned conferences.
The first week of the playoff there will be 16 games played on Thursday through Saturday. The 8 highest ranked teams who play at home will choose in their ranked order which day they will play. The remaining 8 games will fill the empty slots at existing bowl games.
Week two of the playoffs will be comprised of 8 games played on Friday and Saturday(days will also be picked by higher ranked teams) between those who had first round byes and the winners of the 8 bowl games from the first round. The winners of the 8 home field games will receive a second round bye.
Week three of the playoff will also be comprised of 8 games between the winners of the home games and the winners in week two(again Friday and Saturday chosen by highest ranked). Week four played on New Years Day will have 4 games (just as God intended). Week 5 will be the semifinals.
Every year two weeks after the semis the Championship game will be played at the new 85,000 seat retractable dome Liberty Bowl at the Fairgrounds in Memphis TN!
I do of course believe that the American will add the Air Force Academy, TCU, West Virginia, and Notre Dame to become a 16 team conference. I also believe that in this scenario the "FBS" would winnow itself down to 8 sixteen team conferences, for a total 128 teams, plus any independents who wish to hang around as fresh meat.
I realize this probably benlifits Memphis more than any other team, but what the hell I'm a Memphis grad and this is my dream.

He elimates the Memphis LB game and gives it to Indianapolis only because he says all games must be in a staduim of 65k or more. Thats silly. Game tickets don't amount to much when it come to money, it's a drop in the bucket. As usual, TV money would drive the bus. So, keep bowl games in their cities (like he has with the nashville site) and don't worry about ticket sales.

If it's a playoff game where the teams have an actual chance of playing for a national title, you won't have to worry about ticket sales. It'll sell out.
