Cuba is very safe. You can walk down the streets with an android phone, which represents 1 year salary for a cuban, and you won't get robbed. It is a world class chithole though. I will take freedom and my chances in Motown. Haiti is so bad that the Haitians here on Temp status...........NAACP sued the government so they do not get deported.

Wow! The church I attend just had a bunch of folks come back two weeks ago from Haiti, from the sound of this, they were fortunate to make it back unharmed.

From time immemorial I have heard of many denominations of church missions to Haiti. Thousands of people have gone on missions to help. Millions upon millions of dollars in aid and effort over the years (perhaps billions?). While I feel sorry for the regular people and their plight, in all the years I have heard of missions down there it seems almost no progress has been made, which seems ridiculous in some ways. Other missions in other parts of the world seem to have been much more fruitful.
Is Haiti where they believe in voodoo as much as anything else? If so, I think this taints the various church efforts to really effect change. The culture as a whole seems to embrace their situation as a foregone conclusion rather than the hope of something better. Their appears to be a lot of strange stuff going on there besides just the usual government corruption. That seems to play into their corrupt govt's hands. Not sure if efforts are really wasted there, because humans are there, but it does look like a sinkhole from the larger view. And right on the same island you have the Dominican republic which is comparatively better off. Not too many Haitians play baseball, I guess.

Depends on what kind of Fruit you're after. Souls (not civic progress) are the fruit my church is after, and apparently the crop is abundant there.
So, the protests are due to the govt's attempt to raise fuel prices. Does anyone know whether this is a flat out price increase or is the Haitian govt trying to reduce a fuel subsidy?

Building a school or painting a church isn't helping. There is a fair amount of commentary and research that suggests that the best way to help any disadvantaged group is simply to give people access to funds.
