South Africa is pretty bad. You don't venture off the beaten track at all.

Egypt is on my bucket list too. But I would like things to calm down there.

S. Africa is one the rape capitals on Earth. Their congress passed a law allowing the government to confiscate white owned farms without compensation. Killing white farmers is the national sport.

Maxine Waters would fit right in in that place.

RE: You might want to avoid this African country
We were in Pretoria (Tshwane) in 2009. We stayed at the Sheraton Pretoria, across the street from the Union Buildings (capitol). We were there for a game at Loftus Versfeld. We were not allowed to walk to the stadium (8 blocks away) over concerns for our safety (it was an afternoon game). We walked across the street and up the hill to the Union Buildings. For those who saw the movie Invictus, we were where Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) was picked up by his wife in the car after meeting Nelson Mandela. A security guard from the hotel followed us out of the building and stayed behind, on hotel property, but kept us in sight.

I just had a friend return from a visit to S. Africa. She loved it.

We loved it too. Beautiful country. They're trying really hard to make it work, or at least were in 2009. As long as Mandela was alive, I think the radicals were afraid to push things too hard. Now it seems to be a different story. Kind of reminiscent of Kenya after Kenyatta died.

RE: You might want to avoid this African country
ahh, the heart of darkness. i never had a desire to see africa until i met my wife. she lived in mozambique for a year and did like three trips to the congo for operation smile. before we found out she was pregnant we had a trip booked to namibia south africa and mozambique. that trip will still happen. right now we're limited to where we can travel in the continent cuzza malaria. working on number two. confined to the few arid areas where it's safe. we went to morocco this past april. only concern really was the typhoid and the little one. that turned into a minor concern after a few days. although she did sport a hundred and two fever on the night train from marrakech to tangier. it's a shame other muslim countries can't operate like morocco. but it's got to be because of the people. it's not like they've been blessed with forward leadership. but perhaps the key is to just not be ****** enough to not hassle your people so hard. not sure exactly what the tensions between the pseudo indigenous (my moroccan history is spotty at best) berbers and the rest of the country are but it seems like they tolerate each other instead of tearing their country apart. i'd love to see the entire middle east. i can just picture how majestic iran must be. all those mountains that westerners are afraid of. one hundred and one arabian nights is a magical book

i really want to go to ethiopia and tanzania. and for some reason cameroon and khartoum. it looks so exotic. don't be scared of africa. that's adventure
