Then there's also the fact that the program was designed to get linguists of 44 specific languages and medical specialists into the military. Per my son the US Army is currently well over 110% capacity of allotted slots for the MOS (military occupational specialty) 68W (combat medics) which is one of the reasons he's getting out. When you are over staffed it creates a backlog in the training, promotion, and transfer processes. If they are thinning the herd of a specific MOS it only makes sense that the thinning starts with non-citizens.

If you serve a hitch and get an honorable discharge, you should get citizenship. I've never understood why this isn't the rule, dating back to dealing with Filipino stewards in the Navy.

If you are RIFd for needs of the military, that should qualify you.

It was a needed program at the time. We were fighting in the Middle East and needed additional people who spoke and read certain languages to serve as interpreters, in intelligence, etc. and there was a real shortage of medical personnel. One of our EMS medics had served four years with the 82nd Airborne as just a grunt, joined the SC Guard as a grunt, but used his GI Bill to get his paramedic certification. After 9/11 he deployed once as a grunt, then re-enlisted in the regular army as a medic and served an additional eight years active duty.

Now, however, with ground combat winding down the needs aren't as crucial.

These people were lied to and it’s because of the immigration crack down.. put down the crack pipe and smell reality Trumpkin. If you want to boot them out fine but they are not deported. It’s called credibility and honoring a deal. That used to mean something and it still does to me. I don’t care if it was one person Trumpkin. You guys hang onto this 40 number and the lawyers say it is at least 40 and the govt. isn’t talking. I’m raising awareness and if you don’t want to be aware you are in the right voting demo.
