Mark Sagoff makes the case that the notion that humans are creating another geological era (or epoch) is really just a form of human narcissism.

Absolutely. Epochs can only be determined by looking back. WAY back. The idea that we could be witnessing (and living through!) a change significant enough to justify a new geologic era is pretty ******* fanciful.

RE: Is the antropocene really he narcisscene?
The interesting item that I saw recently is that one of the most interesting issues that has happened to the human race in the last 100 years is that we have removed the element of the natural world being a driver of genetics and replaced it with culture.

And, accordingly with a *much* higher survival rates, and subsequent breeding of those survivors, the pace of genetic expansion has increased at an amazingly rapid pace. (i.e. when culture takes care of those with genetic issues that would leave them susceptible in a 'hunter/gatherer' world, the genetics associated with them survive to the next generations in greater and greater numbers.)

Tbh, the issue starts to hit a little too close to Margaret Sanger and other 'purity' arguments that floated around in the 40's and and 50's for my taste, though. (yes, the winners of the World War 2 also had their own special groupings of eugeneticists that were not Nazi)
