Western Kentucky Recruiting of Bassey
From today's Courier-Journal: Western Kentucky will pay 5-star recruit Charles Bassey's guardian $200K as an assistant, school says. That amount is equal to WKU's top-paid assistant, who has a decade more experience as a college coach.

Hiring Auriantal certainly invites a new level of scrutiny, but has been done by many schools and found to be ok.

Whatever it takes, as long as it's within the rules, right?

I think what makes this unique is that Auriantal isn't even really a basketball coach. I mean he played some at Wisconsin (I believe) and was hired at a small school to bring over international kids (but didnt).
That doesn't make it against the rules (though we clearly know what is going on). But, where is the line? Do hire the insurance broker father of a recruit at a top recruit salary? If it isn't improper benefits, it really should be.

As much crap as I gave Stansbury...The guy is getting it done. There is some serious excitement at WKU.

Shady as it is, it ain't against the rules right now. So, perhaps we need to find a spot on the coaching staff for the father of Mark Williams (if that's what it takes to get him here).

I looked Mark up. I know 247 isn't the most accurate but did we not offer him?
Edit: vc lists us. I was gonna say.
Posted from mobile device. Hopefully it's coherent.

I think we were his first offer. For him, Rivals is definitely more accurate.

I remember back in the 80's when Kansas hired Danny Manning's father who was a Truck Driver as an assistant coach to get Danny there.

The funny thing is Jones and Stansbury almost mirror each other the first 2 seasons at their respective school. Jones started from less than what WKY had and produced a little more/about the same.
So, if you believe Stansbury is getting it done, you must believe that Jones "was" getting it done.

BTW, Mark Williams' father Alex is a gastroenterologist. So that plan won't work.

Its all about trajectory. The first two seasons weren't the problem. The plateau is the problem.

From a recruiting standpoint, stansbury is curb stomping Jones. I guess the jury is out on how much success he’ll have with all the talent he’s got.

And almost everybody else at the mid major level...
But, the posters encouraging caution about our recruits should be urging caution with Western Kentuckys recruits as well, right? Hell, they need to worry about eligibility.

I'm very critical of JJ. I don't care for him as ODU's coach, but the last two recruiting classes have been very good. He's managed to sign some really exciting talent. Lets hope we keep this class stays enrolled because I think they could be special. The trajectory is changing, but its too little too late IMO. He needed to recruit these type of players four years ago. He had success to sell and a Top 25 ranking that he failed to capitalize on.

RE: Western Kentucky Recruiting of Bassey
The concerns with Coach Jones are not (or at least should not be) on the recruiting front. It just happens that they are being aired out primarily in the recruiting-related threads.
The concerns (at least for me) are more with his under-performance with what are plainly talented teams.
Some of that may be bad luck (e.g., Carver hurting himself just prior to the VCU game; flu-bug ravaging the team for 3-plus weeks). But luck is supposed to even out over time. We are due for a season in which a Coach Jones team OVER-performs. It needs to be this coming season.

Completely disagree. If anything, recruiting is the primary concern. This is a team that had Baker and Taylor in the starting lineup for multiple years. I don't see when the team underperforms.
2013- Certainly not
2014- Certainly not
2015- I could see an argument here
2016- Think this was our least talented year, but this season was not up to par.
2017- Good year, 2nd in conference (and top 70 overall) on a team projected to be further down.
Hard to compare our injuries to other teams, but the lack of McClinton hurt. Stith being banged up in 15/16 had a pretty big effect on the team. Having said that, I'm sure most teams have had injuries so that is not an excuse.

I have not been on the fire Jones train. However, there is far more excitement in Bowling Green than there is in Norfolk. Pretty tough for you to even consider arguing that.
