RE: FWIW
Oh I think the staff has gotten a lot of praise for receiving the tape, liking what they saw, and all the results that came afterward.
But this wasn't a kid sending a tape to a school he wanted to go to, it was his dad just hearing about a start up program while at an airport. Nothing wrong with Roy's clarification. It adds truth with context, something we could use a lot more of around here.

Pretty much.
It was actually Taylor's trainer, who was the father of a kid who played FCS football somewhere else. He told the VP about Taylor and that, "ODU needed to get this kid." His reel got sent to Ron Whitcomb, who watched it and went directly to Wilder's office and said, "You've got to see this." Taylor had no offers at that time, but had taken a visit to Richmond. He and his father really liked Richmond, but left without an offer. ODU then offered him and he accepted. After that, the Richmond Coach called and offered him, but it was too late.

They offered him by watching tape. Then, when they visited him at his school in Georgia (after the offer), Whitcomb thought he was going to get fired for offering a short, scrawny kid a scholarship.

To the OP's premise, it would be interesting to actually hear from other local coaches as to their assessment of our recruiting prowess.
Interestingly, we have two who are very active on this board.
(and both are too classy to opine either way)

I agree it would be interesting to get a more complete view. I simply mentioned one coach and his opinion and experience. Not sure it's representative.
By the same token, Millers piece laying out where the top talent from the area is going to play is shocking to me in it's almost complete lack of representation by ODU.
I get it some kids want to go away to play and the very top of the pool is gong to big time programs, but does this have to mean we come up with nothing?
Some very recent commitments look promising, maybe the tide is turning.

A recent article had the Lake Taylor coach quoted as saying he felt he owed it to coach. Sounds like they’re working hard there to build relationships.
