Pitcher Evan Phillips Made His MLB Debut at Yankee Stadium
Evan Phillips made his MLB debut in the bottom of the sixth pitching for Atlanta at Yankee Stadium. He walked Aaron Hicks and got Didi Gregorius to pop up, which was the last out of the inning. He's 23.

RE: Pitcher Evan Phillips Made His MLB Debut at Yankee Stadium
He really had good stuff and emerged late in his junior year.

Funny story...we were at a pool in NW Raleigh discussing NCAA baseball action and the LSU game from the night before was brought up. UNCW lost a really close low scoring game in the Regional final. A lady overheard our discussion and announced that her son, Evan, pitched that game that basically shut down LSU for the most part. She mentioned that he really loved baseball from an early age and hinted that he wasn't likely coming back for his senior year. I wasn't surprised by that at the time, but then again he didn't go high like many of the other UNCW pitchers probably due to previous control issues so I wasn't sure. She was a nice person. It was such a coincidence that I'd imagine the odds of that happening are on par with getting struck by a lightening bolt or something like that.

He later gave up a 2-run HR to Giancarlo Stanton, but still a good debut nonetheless.

I have to admit, out of all the UNCW pitchers since NU has been in the league, I don’t really remember Phillips.

He emerged late in his junior season after he started pitching exclusively from the stretch position. He shut down C of C in a critical CAA tourney game and then shut down LSU back to back. C of C scored a few unearned runs but luckily UNCW bounced back to win that game. He went on from there. His stuff was nasty after changing his delivery.

Round 17 is pretty high in my book. For comparison sake, Seth Frankoff, who of course also reached the bigs, was taken in the 27th round.

And it wasn't quite a lightning bolt scenario either. Phillips was a 33rd round pick out of HS, so the ability was always there and seen by the scouts. He just took nearly 3 years to buy into the system and put it all together. Once that happened, his stock skyrocketed.

I believe Phillps is now the 10th Seahawk to appear in a game in the MLB. Congratulations Evan!

The lightening bolt scenario was referring to his mother being at some random pool in Raleigh right beside me as I'm discussing the LSU vs UNCW game from the night before and not the fact that he made it to the bigs....

I'm talking about all of it. Him turning it on at the tail end of his Junior year, getting drafted, and making the bigs. None of it is "lightning in a bottle". It has to do with him always having the talent and putting it together.

Better late than never!

Yep Nation, everyone knew that he had arm talent so that's not lightning in a bottle for sure. He had to figure it out. Hope that he figures it out for the Braves. That would be nice!
