Rooting for Childers
Our season really depends on how much he has improved over the last year....

RE: Rooting for Childers
I was sometimes critical of Childers last year...the QB situation was odd.

But he is our guy now.... if Marcus has improved overall and can make the big throws we will beat Iowa. I will be cheering him on.04-cheers

RE: Rooting for Childers
Childers can only do his best in the constraints imposed by a Carey offense. If nothing has changed in this coaching staff and if it is the same conservative approach that does not offer a QB a chance to succeed, it would be foolish to expect different results

This is a fast tempo offense, which is based on 1) multiple running threats including the QB, 2) short, high percentage passing routes which spread the field, and 3) the deep pass which takes advantage of defense schemes designed to stop 1&2. The play calling was not conservative. Childers was given numerous opportunities to make plays, but he really struggled with the deep pass. For the offense to be effective you need all 3 aspects and minimal turnovers. Childers was a fairly effective runner, he threw the short routes well, and he did not throw many picks; but with him at QB, our deep passing game was non existent. If he improves in this area, the Huskies will have a solid year. If not, we will beat the bad teams and struggle against the good teams. It’s that simple.

The tempo does not make play calling aggressive or not conservative. It just means you are conservative more quickly and off the field faster. That's why I think if NIU continues to run a Carey conservative not interested in scoring offense, they should drain the play clock down to 00 every time.

When ever you have an inexperienced QB you run a more conservative offense. You’d be a complete moron of a coach to run a high risk offense with a first year QB.. You need to stop blaming Childer’s shortcomings on Carey. You have never once admitted Childer’s sucks on the deep ball. Just say it once. Then people may start to take your Carey critique serious. Otherwise it just sounds like excuses. It’s the same offense Lynch and Hare excelled under. But their quality play allowed Carey to open it up more.

Rooting for Childers
Childers also needs to improve on the accuracy of his sideline and bubble screen passes, too. It was frustrating seeing some of those short screen passes hit the ground. This should be easily correctable, and I'm sure we'll see improvements in these shorter passes.

He did struggle with the deep pass last year but he also struggled with short, intermediate and screen passes. Every throw was an adventure with the occasional good throw.

That said he is our guy for 2018 so I am hoping that he has improved and I am rooting for his success!

That doesn’t change how you evaluate his play last year. It should be taken into consideration for how you expect him to improve in 2018 though. There could be more focus on the things he did well last year. I thought he had decent pocket awareness. Didn’t get rattled or panic. I’ve mentioned before that I think he has poise and that’s great. But his number one job is to put the ball in the wrs hands. And unanimously we are all hoping he improves on that this year.

RE: Rooting for Childers
Definitely agree that Childers had good pocket awareness and generally made good decisions. However, he did struggle with the mid to long passes. That said, this was Drew Hare's main issue the first year he started and was able to make big improvements his second year. I'm hopeful that Childers will be the same. Early reports from spring training gave all indications that Childers
looked much better......lets hope it translates on game day.

If nothing has changed in coaching dept, it is extremely unfair to expect Childers to be good this year. There are few QBs in the nation right now that could be successful at NIU. Defending the Huskies is as easy as a defense can hope for.

RE: Rooting for Childers
It’s the same offense that is being run by the majority of college teams; it’s fairly complex with many options based on reads. Without a deep threat it becomes much easier to defend. Having a deep threat actually opens up the running game. This is why we scored so many points against a strong SDSU defense. They changed their scheme mid game to defend the deep pass, that’s when Huff started gaining yards in bunches. Throwing the deep pass effectively was a huge part of the success of our most productive QBs, including Lynch. It has little to do with play calling/offensive scheme, and much to do with execution. If those identical deep passes which were incomplete last year get completed this year, nobody will be questioning the play calling, and we will all be commenting on Childrers improvement.

NIU throws one deep pass pattern, which is a very very low percentage chance of completion. And of course, all so that a turnover is not committed. Someday I hope Carey realizes, 3 and outs are essentially the same as half a turnover. The fear of the mistake is what creates this paralysis when it comes to the offense. Defenses also know NIU will absolutely not use the middle of the field in the passing game which also makes it easier for linebackers to over commit and cheat on the bubble screens. Defenses have adjusted to what NIU does, and not only that, NIU has become EXTREMELY conservative and predictable in the play calling department. What I never understood, how come Carey does not delegate all offensive responsibilities to someone else since it obviously is not his strength and brings the entire team down. Its just a really bad situation, I know NIU cannot afford to hire a new coach and we are stuck with this. It is just painful to see coaching holding this team back.

You have this backwards. The offense isn’t predictable because of its design, it’s predictable because the qb can only perform part of it so it’s not being fully implemented. Your notion is that Childers is performing at 100% capacity and the offense is forcing him down to 70%capacity. It’s the other way around. Childers is running at 70% and that’s forcing the offense down to 70%.

You can argue it effectiveness, but spread offenses PURPOSELY don’t attack the middle of the field with the pass often. The entire concept is based on spreading the defense out thin sideline to sideline so you can gash the middle with big runs(because LB and secondary is covering sideline) and deep passes. But if the defense has zero worry about the deep pass the offense does t work. The offense will work IF Childers can make the defense respect that.

You can blame Carey for puttIng a QB in who can’t run his offense. Yes. But after that it’s all on Childers for his poor accuracy.

Wow I just cannot begin to even start to say how flawed this thinking is. You are blaming Childers for being in a system where it is absolutely impossible for a QB to succeed? It worked with Jordan Lynch because he was one of the 3 best players in college football who had an unbelievable talent of running up the gut. Linebackers could not cheat on the spread because they knew if they did, Lynch would gash them. Without a Jordan Lynch, you have to find other ways to use the advantage of what a spread offense is supposed to provide you. Right now , NIU does not even attempt to use the middle of the field and NIU's offense is SO SO SO easy to defend. A talented coach adjusts to the talent he has, Carey is still running a Jordan Lynch offense.

And that is not even touching on the complete debacle how he handles the position. Carey knew damn well Childers was his choice in the summer of last year, but in complete fear of RS freshman mistakes he took away his reps and threw him into the fire several games in, and thus retarding the development of Childers. I always say this but its true, if you are a parent who has a very promising QB talent, I would STRONGLY recommend steering your son away from NIU until there is a coaching change. I have never seen such a complete mismanagement in my life before.

I guess my point is the title of this thread should be "Rooting for Carey". That is where the shortcoming lies and until things change in that respect, to expect a different result is the true definition of insanity.

RE: Rooting for Childers
To me it seemed like Childers actually hit the short throws over the middle fairly well, though we didn't do that very often.

I was hoping he'd be more of a threat running the ball, but I didn't see much there, in terms of either breaking tackles, outrunning anyone, or making people miss. I think he will need to improve there, too.

RE: Rooting for Childers
Time will tell if Childers will be a quality QB. This year if he can hit on some of the deep passes he'll be good, if not next man up. I would give him the entire season though. However, I have said it since they hired Carey, he is not head coach material. I believe another hire could have had at worst the same record. He seems like a nice guy, but he does not have an offensive mind. I think anyone wanting to be honest has to admit that. He would be a great offensive line coach. I know we are stuck with him, but I hope his contract is not extended.
