The problem with the Bailiff years (and every year since 1960) was that we didn't build on our successes. So if Bloom gets us to a 6-6 bowl this year, fine, nice job, but it has to be cemented in with progress the year after, and the year after, and the year after...

Except this is not even remotely close to how Rice Athletics, the 25(0) or most of Parliament acted. 7 years in going to a bowl and beating a pretty terrible AFA team was heralded as impressive. Making another bowl (and getting throttled) by a 6-6 team was enough to make it rain extensions. Anyone who pointed out that beating a 6-6 team in a bowl wasn't a big deal was shouted down as a malcontent. We saw exactly how the next 4 years developed.

8 years in we were applauding a participation award. Same **** different day with MBB and the CIT under Braun. Color me skeptical that this cycle won't repeat.

Oh I know Ant... and I was one of those people on your side...

If it repeats, then it won't live up to OO's first line

There has never been a sustained effort to fix football, but I'm encouraged that the BOT approved higher coaching salaries and recruiting budgets. These coaches we have now are much more highly regarded than the last bunch.. It's a good sign, but why has it taken so long? From what I hear, fundraising continues for the full renovation of Rice Stadim. If Rice wins consistently, fans will come out to support the team. That has never happened before, but my hope is that it's finally happening now. It's way past time.

I haven’t heard anything about stadium renovations in several years. Wonder when we’ll get a plan? I like that they’re using the stadium for community event like movies under the stars, next up a concert maybe? They should do that for the students when they get back too just to get people into the stadium.

Agree. It's an incredibly enormous venue. We need to schedule more high school football playoffs, soccer games, and concerts. I'd chairback everything that's left, even the south endzone. We're so lucky. It's a bigtime football stadium. There's no doubt. A bigtime stadium deserves a bigtime team. We're Rice for God's sake!!

This is like the cheesy and unintentionally hilarious motivational speech at the end of a straight to DVD movie.

Chairbacks with what money and for who exactly?

Even better idea - let's build a SECOND EZF. Because 2 is better than one. Were Rice for Gods Sake. Big time schools need more EZFs than small time ones.

The fact that this is ALL you do indicates where the problem really lies.

It's called projection.

I don't think your characterization of what happened on the Parliament is accurate. Everyone was happy to beat mediocre AFA and mediocre Fresno State, but there were plenty of people in agreement with you (or were you in agreement with them?) that those kinds of victories aren't anything to crow about from a program-building standpoint. Fun for fans, good for players and families, but not indicative that Rice was on the verge of crawling from the gutter.

In my mind, making a crappy bowl game should be the bare minimum level for a team like Rice. Any season we aren't making a bowl (outside of a coach's 1st season) is a failure. It is harder to make Regionals in baseball or Alphabet soup tournament in basketball than a bad bowl game in football.

Yes and no.

Making a crappy bowl game should be seen as a step toward making a noncrappy bowl, whatever the hell that is. But what is needed is a trend, not one year results. The trend starts in Year One.

Despite my name, I am not optimistic that we can make a bowl in Year One, no matter how crisp our execution and how good our attitude. But the important thing is that Year Two be better, and Year Three better still.

I don't think I am remembering it completely wrong. There were several of us who were not unduly impressed, but many were. Couple this with the 25(0) and stuff from last year and the year before, and there still was a sizable driving force that bought into "unprecedented success".

Heck, see this: https://csnbbs.com/thread-609984.html

Are there any quality bowl games at the G5 level other than the Access Bowl? I can't think of any off the top of my head, at least not in CUSA. Even if the program really excels, the result will be a G5 bowl in the end. If Bloomgren stays ten years and wins 85% of his games, I still don't think that changes. We're stuck right now. Measuring success by the quality of the bowl game may not work here. If Rice wins the conference a few times, starts a bowl game win streak, and appears in the top 25, those are real benchmarks...

Right now the New Orleans Bowl might be the best G5 Bowl due to time slot and location.

I like that bowl game. I hope the Heart of Dallas doesn't fold. That's a decent one sometimes. It's too bad we can't land the Independence for our champion.
