While appearing on MSNBC's “AM Joy,” Waters said she was “surprised” by Schumer's comments and accused Democratic leaders of doing “anything” in order to protect their power.

“One of the things I recognize, being an elected official, is in the final analysis, you know, leadership like Chuck Schumer's will do anything that they think is necessary to protect their leadership,” Waters said.

Waters' response came amid a broader discussion about civility in politics. Comedian Michelle Wolf, who insulted White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders earlier this year, said Waters' call didn't go far enough and that people should make their harassment intensely personal.

Back in 2000, the Democrats held their convention in LA. Gore picked Lieberman for VP, and Maxine Waters responded by saying “This is the last time I support an all-white anything.” There were a few delegates and activists who made public mention of Lieberman’s religion in unattractive ways, although IIRC Waters herself did not do that. If this discussion about Schumer stays on the media’s radar for a few more days, the same subject will come up again. Of course, the media wants to protect Waters so they’ll try to move things along to other subjects.
